I just got back my first roll of b&w film from a pro lab. Overall, I am pleased with the shots. But, I would have liked to see more light (over exposed?) in the prints. Some of the subjects just came out too dark. I had set my ASA at 400 and I have seen some threads here mentioning setting the ASA at something lower. If I had set ASA at 300 or 200 would that have made the prints a bit brighter ?

Frankly it is hard to evaluate commercially processed negatives. What developer was used, how long, what temerature....? Before you can evaluate the print you have to be able to evaluate the negative.Then you can determine proper development, exposure and printing.
