Lately i see with joy that the eurovision cr@p is not taken that seriously therefore it gets more entertaining. I loved it when last year the finn band won it, every serious-face miniskirt "artist" was fallen on their face.

Yah, there's been talk about how the Eurovision contest this Spring is gonna cost way too much and that's why Finland offers only crappy artists to avoid organizing another contest... Though I didn't (and still don't) like Lordi, but it was different and captured the public's fascination. It is a weird thing really how only recently metal/heavy music has gotten the attention it deserves. Metal bands frequently populate the top 10 list and yet there is very little talk about that. And there has been some very succesful bands in the recent years.

I guess the pop/easy listening/whatever genre, backed by mega-labels, gets the most attention by the virtue of strong marketing and the "ease" of listening. Unchallenging music with catchy, simple melodies/structure and a refrain easily remembered seems to be the way to easy profits. And in many cases "artists' " only real input to the music is just singing etc. The creative work is done elsewhere. Looks like it's music for the industry and not the other way around.

Argh. Rant over.

Hey, stop mocking Finnish music! Tuomo, are there any new Finnish artists you can recommend? In the 80's, I listened to new wave like Hassisen Kone, Eppu Normaali and Tuomari Nurmio. I still like Tuomari Nurmio (I think his collaboration with Alamaailman Vasarat was brilliant) and Ismo Alanko Säätiö, but I really haven't been keeping up with the Finnish music scene.

Ah well, never really got into Alanko's music or Eppu Normaali for that matter. Tuomari Nurmio has earned my respect with his early production (Lasten mehuhetki), though I never was an avid fan of his.

It really depends on what kind of music you like! But if you are asking for my opinion as to what bands I see as promising, I would say Children of Bodom is a good band. A truckload of skillful playing and good songs comes from them. Their live shows are very nice indeed. For wholly different type of music you could try Deep Turtle (not Purple, mind you!). The group's music is characterised by weird time signatures, unintelligible lyrics (until the most recent album, on which they sing in, err, Spanish) and skillful playing. I enjoy their music thoroughly. It's just a bit hard to find on CDs, they are in constant demand with nearly non-existant supply. You might get lucky with Soulseek, though...

Oh, and you might want to try YUP as well. By far the best Finnish rock band in my books. Their early music was very absurd punk/prog rock oriented music with clever and funny lyrics. In recent years the pace may have slowed down a bit, but in exchange their songs are well thought out and lyrically good, albeit different from the past. Completely enjoyable music.

But apart from those bands, I haven't really listened to Finnish groups lately. Been more into Jethro Tull/NoMeansNo/Queen/Keep of Kalessin and Marduk...

Thanks Tuomo! I think I'll try out YUP, I can see cdon (my main source of CD's) have a couple of their albums. I like Finnish lyrics, it's a nice way to keep up your Finnish skills if you don't have much time to read.
When talking about reading, is there a Finnish photo magazine you can recommend? In the past, I remember there was Valokuva and Kameralehti, do they still exist?

Try out these two albums from YUP:

1990-1992, a compilation of 4 EPs from the very beginning of their Finnish speaking career (they did a couple of EPs in English). This album represents their early career at its best. And then there is the latest album (2005), Keppijumppaa. Best Finnish contemporary rock album IMHO with societal and global themes.

What comes to photography magazines, I don't read them... so I cannot recommend any! I know only one by name; Pikseli. Naturally, it is about digital photography...
