Just got back my first roll of Kodakchrome!

Just got my first roll of Kodakchrome back from Kodak. It was an expired roll I picked up for cheap on Ebay. I don't have it scanned it, but WOW! The colors are spectacular! The pics themselves are nothing special but just the colors alone makes it seem like they are many times better than the stuff I shot on C-41..

Where did you have it processed? Kodak doesn't process KR themsleves anymore. I sent off a roll of E6 slide film in a Kodak mailer and it took 3 months to come back to me. Made me very very wary of sending anything in a Kodak mailer again.

The last I knew, Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, KS, is the only place in North America that still does daily runs of K14 Kodachrome. They tell me that all Kodak brand Kodachrome processing ends up there.

I've used them several times now, with excellent results and fairly good turn-around each time. If I get it out in the morning mail on Monday, I'll get the slides back on Saturday, and sometimes even on Friday.

Well I thought there were just two places left one in US one in Japan.

I send mine to Swiss PO box but it gets forwarded to US, it is too too like the Wizard of Oz, then the little girl remember 'this is not Kanzas' and yellow brick (box) road...

Alas you wont have a memory of Kchrome 10 and kchrome 25, the last remaining - Kchrome 64, - is different, but only a shadow, dont speak about 200.

Take a look at my link and picture guys. The mailer is for kodachrome and the processed slides are from TX. Maybe the TX place is just a hub for all the mailers but it definitely looks like it came from Kodak. Even the mailer inquiry 800 number says they are kodak..

Edit: Just called the 800 number and yes she said Parsons, KS is only place that process Kodachrome.

I used to shoot K25. I actually liked K64 best of all. If I could be sure of reliable processing, I would shoot K64 again. I really love it. But I wonder if it's too contrasty to scan well?

When my E6 mailer went astray, I called the 800 number on the receipt and Kodak said that everything goes to Dwaynes now. The Texas address may have forwarded it on to Kansas, which is why it took so long (3+ weeks) to get returned to you. A damn site better than 3+ months, though.

25 and 64 will scan ok (well superlative then) but you need a high res scanner and you need to select the correct grain alias and dust removal options... K is a grain film, unlike the Fujichrome

I think the manual should say with K chrome:

- enable grain anti aliasing
- disable scanners hardware anti dust, I'd use a bulb blower as well

If you dont have manual you need to post your scanner model and some one will know.

If there is an option you will need to select a high DMAX as the blacks will need a lot of burn through, this may be fixed on OTS scanners, it seems to be on mine.

I have a Epson 4990 I haven't set up yet. But what I've read (here and elsewhere) about scanning has always said to turn off all of the scanner's default processing and fix problems after scanning with your post-processing sw. (Don't mean to take this OT or try to cover something here that may have been covered elsewhere.)

Congrats, ywenz, on entering the Koda-zone. It's a fabulous world of wonderful colour, tonality and analog reality (yeah, I know...) Just so you know, the folks at Kodak Rochester who are "in the know" are extremely fond of Kodachrome. When K-25 was deleted from the line-up, an actual wake was held.

Can't wait to see some scans, and I hope you continue using it. Not only would it be a great tool, but Kodachrome needs all the support it can get.

The manual for the Epson driver may repeat what I've said, please read. I think you are correct in that you should not use the scanners dust removal, and instead post process. But the anti alias may need to be done early.

The Epson driver may try for a compressed file by default inhibit this as much as your workstation can tolerate.

If you use a 3rd party driver you may need to vary.

Also select the highest resolution your workstation can cope with.

...that is turn off all of the scanner's processing except for Digital Ice. Apparently it's the only way to go for dust removel.

Noel: I have two rolls of 25 left, I haven't decided how to use them. One likely for the Oly 35SP, but I can't decide for the other one. That will likely be determined by application, but I'm thinking of saving it for when I get an M body/lens combination ... of some variety. Haven't made the decision on that, either. First priority is to get a a very good scanner. I will be selling off some gear to fund that.

The digital ICE wont work with a grain film like Kchrome, unless it is really sophisticated.

Kchrome is almost digital where the digits are the silver chloride crystals either sensitised or not, both the scanners digital scan pixelation and ICE will interact with this grain (quantisation) process.

I'd suggest

anti aliaz in
ICE out

is your 1st option but the manual should confirm this.

ICE will work well with chromogenic films like XP2 or Fujichrome.

But there is no loss in doing your own process so long as you keep the slides in archival storage as scanners optics and processing will improve within a five year window.

I've only tried 2 rolls of Kodachrome 64 so far but have been impressed by the colours. Wanted to take some to Cuba with me but had to minimize amount of camera gear.

I just shot a roll of it last weekend, but I used my SLR so I wouldn't blow the exposure on any of the shots, and I have only one lens for the M3 and I needed longer ones for what I was shooting.

Sent it through the postal service (in the mailer) so my fingers are crossed that they won't lose it like they have with some of my stuff.

Jon, you might want to consider buying delivery confirmation for the film you send in -- or using one of the shippers that includes tracking automatically.

I think that's what I'll do from now on. If I like the results, I might wait until I get a few rolls and then put them in a box with the mailers and send it UPS or FedEx.
