Battery leakage

I'm preparing for a trip over New Years and wanted to get some batteries for my cameras...the R2 and Xpan, neither needed them by all indications but I wanted to make sure that I have some spares in my pack.
When opening the Xpan, (batteries 6month old at most), they have seemed to be corroded??? The batteries are 2each CR2 lithium 3v...the contact on the battery positive end had some green looking stuff (hard) and the negative side on the other battery looked rusty...contacts on camera were pretty clean.
This camera gets some use, at least once a month. Has anyone heard of this, should I be worried?
I cleaned with vinegar and then with some alcohol and I have it sitting out drying.
This is really strange because the batteries were new and the camera has not seen rain...although dampness is a constant in seattle.

I guess this post is mostly to see if I need to send the camera off to get a check up, but I would also like some general tips to avoid this again.

Thanks.
Jason
