Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

6 bit coding clarification

Sorry if this has been covered but I am still not sure what the coding is supposed to do. I know about the EXIF and flash features but am not so concerned about those. I would like to know if the coding affects the picture in anyway by compensating fall off. For example if I have an encoded Noctilux would the M8 compensate and decrease the amount vignetting? If I can get a good jpeg out of the camera this way then it will be worth it. Thanks.

Leica's explanation of the zebra-coding specifically mentions correction for "lens shadowing" - which sounds like a bad german/english translation for vignetting.

it is not clear whether the correction will be only for that vignetting caused by interaction with the sensor, or also include correcting for the "normal" vignetting that one would get anyway with film.

Some people LIKE the way the Nocti vignettes and use it creatively, and wouldn't want it corrected except so as to MATCH their film results.

So full clarification will need to await more detailed, image-based reviews, once Leica lifts the ban on discussing or showing images....
