Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Nikon F and Leica R lenses on the M8

I have some Nikon and R lenses that I would like to use on the (pre-ordered) M8, such as the Nikkor 4/20 and the Leica 21-35 while waiting for the cash to (maybe) buy Leica M glass

It should be theoretically possible. There is a N to M adapter at http://www.cameraquest.com/adpSLRRF.htm . Has somebody had some experience in practical use?

R to M should be possible with a Leitz 22228 adapter. I found such an animal on the bay, but it will not take the newer (ROM) lenses I have. A Leica technician told me to find an R lens mount from a defective R body and mount it on the 22228. Any practical experience or other suggestions?

Thanks for your answers
Peter

Hmmm...I would have to suggest a Canon 5D and a adapter. I am willing to bet that no matter how good the M8 sensor is, the 5D will be better.

I have used many a digital sensor and the one in the 5D blows the doors off of them all except for perhaps the new 39MP ones.

Edit: On the Nikon, Is it an F or a RF type lens?

R lenses will block out the viewfinder. Framelines will not be correct. If you can afford all the gear I see in your sig and the M8 as well surely a few nice 2nd hand lenses could be managed? You'll find that RF photgraphy is rather minimalistic.

Why not just buy a 28 2.0 aspheric and call it good? It will be a 37mm 2.0 on it, a darn near perfect walk around lens.

I have given up on Canon DSLR (unhappy with the color rendition) and am perfectly happy with the R9+DMR. The M8 has the same sensor, so I presume I shall be happy with it, too. Trying to use some WA lenses on both bodies seems logical.

Nikon F, I also use a D200 for those situations where I need AF and have collected an array of Nikkor lenses since the Nikon F days. and Nikon has produced some excellent lenses. Using a 4/20 vintage lens on an M body does not seem absurd. DOF should be sufficient for zone focusing even fully open.

There is an R-to-M mount adapter. You have to search. Cameraquest used to sell the "rangefinder coupled" versions, but with a caveat (you transferred the distance from your lens to the scale on the adaptor).

Oh, duh. I missed a crucial part in your original post.

I think you're out of luck there, then. Why won't the ROM version mount? That's interesting.
