Smallest Full Frame 35 with 1.9 or Faster Lens?
Does anyone know of a smaller or lighter weight full frame 35mm camera with f/1.9 or faster lens than the Fuji Natura S? It boasts a 24/1.9. Size 109.5mm x 8mm x 37mm, 195 grams

It would probably have to be a rangefinder. SLRs are bigger and scale focus would be silly with a <f1.9 lens. Can't really think of any very compact ones. There is an olympus 35-S and olympus 35-SII with a f1.8 lens. One of the best cameras ever, in my opinion.

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 is teeny tiny, as are the old 35mm f/1.4 summiluxes, but none are smaller than the Natura...I don't think so anyway.

I have a Canon ML35AF (aka Autoboy Super) which is a viewfinder camera with autofocus... it has a 40/1.9. It isn't a bad camera. It probably isn't smaller than the Natura though.

The Rollei 35 models with f2 Sonnar lens may not be as small, but they will never let you down.

if you can back off to f2.8 you cant beat the Contax T

frank,
wasn't the sonnar in the rollei 35 S and 35 SE a 2.8?
as for the "T models": those were 40mm tessar with max 3.5 aperture ...
just to mention, i am a rollei fan, too. what a pity that this concept will never make it to digital.

sebastian, you are correct. The Rollei 35 Sonnar lenses are f2.8. I've got a TE model with f3.5 Tessar.

I found it odd that the Fuji Natura S was not described anywhere that I could find (in English) as the smallest full frame 35 camera with 1.9 or faster lens -- IF indeed it is. The faster than f/2 24mm lens is equally noteworthy.
then after researching it, I realized that the entire small camera/fast lens topic seemed pretty much off radar.
plenty of stuff is written about the smallest 35 camera, the fastest 35 format lens for a given focal length, the best this or that, but not much on small cameras / fast lenses. To me this is an oversight of an important, interesting, and most useful 35mm subject. So far I have gotten two other photography writers interested in the subject. Time will tell what is turned up.
I am still not sure the Fuji Natura S deserves that title, but it might be.

I am curious, you wrote that there are three colors, none of which was black. Was black a special edition or something? I remember when I was living in Japan there was a black version of the Natura-S...

It seems to me that the introduction of the M8 will drive an interest in a fast, wide to get a 1.3X equivalent of the 35mm F1.4 Summilux and the 28mm f2.0 summicron. Not an easy order but necassary if the M8 is to perform the same role in the digital world that the M7-M6 does in the film world.

If you need any help with the Japanese instructions let me know. Although Im not fluent in Japanese, I have had the aqua and black Natura cameras for over a year and a half and am quite familiar with their quirks.
Stuart, the black-coloured version of the Natura, known as the "Natura Black" is a limited-edition version released around March 2005 (the other, pastel-coloured Naturas were first released around November 2004). It adds exposure compensation of +/- 2EV in 0.5 increments.
