Canon 7 value
Hello...
I usually haunt the FSU forum, so I thought I'd pick the brains over here...
I know this is a question that is often unwelcome on a forum, but I have been offered a Canon 7 with a 50mm 1,5 as a trade towards a Camera I'm selling.... assuming these are both in "User" condition (ie. Good working condition, but with a few scuffs,etc.)... what sort of price would such a camera fetch? A ballpark value would even be good.... perhaps two catagories: Meter working, Meter not working...
Thanks!

99% of all 7s have a dead (or dying) Selenium meter. I think the very last ones had CDS--but rarely seen.

The Canonator, a.k.a. the Canon 7, is a nice upgrade from the FSU line up if you are aiming for buili-in selectable framelines that are parallax adjusted.
Go to keh.com and look over their wares. Then deduct 25% to %30.
The Canon 50/1.5 is beautiful lens. It's based on the Zeiss Sonnar.

Most comments I've read on the 'net say the 7 wasn't as well made as the earlier Canon RFs. True/ not true?

Still available, too. User 7, good meter, user 50/1.8 w/series VI hood. I'd pay shipping if someone wants both.
And I agree with joe. It's a tank, like every Pre-EOS Canon I've ever owned.

I had a Canonator, the 7, and now have a P. The build quality on both put my V/C Bessa R to shame. The 7's viewfinder has proper framelines. If Canon had made a 7 without a light meter, then it would be more sought after today. The selenium meter gives the camera an ungainly look, but as a picture taker it is still one of the best LTM bodies ever made with regards to function, not style.
The Canon P on the other hand is just a beautiful piece of industrial art. I just wish the 100mm frameline was an 85 or a 90.

Yipes! Which lens came with it, if you don't mind me asking?

For some reason, Stephen Gandy (Cameraquest) believes the 7/7s/7sZ are a step down in build quality from earlier LTM Canons. I own several screwmount Canons' (IIIA, L1,7 and 7sZ) and consider the finish and overall build quality of the latter two the equal of the IIIA and a definite step-up from the L1 (which seems somewhat crude). When it comes to the viewfinder, both of the 7's win hands down. I consider all four to be about equal when you're talking smoothness of controls.

I believe the black Canon 7 was sold with a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Well that may not be too shabby, if the camera looked good and had that particular lens. It's still higher than I'd want to pay for a 7.

andrew, it was a black body 7, i would think that was a pretty good price for a black body, especially considering it has a $300 lens attached to it.

Well that makes me feel better about my Canon P which included that same lens.
I didn't know the monetary value of the 50/1.4. With that in perspective I can say that I bought a P for a mere C-note.
I must spend some time with that lens.

Hi there ! I'm the lucky owner of the black canon 7 you 're talking about ;-)
Just to let you know : the auction site pictures were crappy but the camera is in very nice shape and in working condition.
you can see it here : http://photocam.ibelgique.com/canon.htm
Note the matching four last digits of the serial numbers of the camera (912411) and lens (82411).
It should be worth the money I paid for it : good user and really collectible too.
No, it's not for sale ;-)

I've been wondering...who has the actual Canonator? Since I never bought it, I can't remember who did...
