Cheapo Leica Lens Hood?

I'm now the proud owner of a couple of Russian LTM range finders. What I've noticed is that accessories, such as lens hoods and filters are costing more than the camera with lens.

So, while shopping for some filters for $24.99 Fed 2 with Industar 50, Elmar copy, I did a bit of shopping for lens hood.

First what's a fair price for a lens hood?

Here is an eBay auction for a 50mm Summar, which doesn't fit an I-50.

Here is what I bet the farm on and it damn well better fit an I-50. The auction I won .

The A36 filters seem to be less treasured, I picked up a couple for less than few buck each. But what's up with the A36 lens hoods? Are they rare?

Depends on who makes the lens hood, Andrew. You can get one from China for about $5 or a Leitz hood for $55. Doesn't seem to be much difference between them as far as I can see.

I have a 5cm Elmar and something called a SOOGZ that lets me put a 39mm lens hood on it. So I have a Leica 12550 lens hood that I picked up cheap on the front - historically incorrect but I don't care - it works.

As some of you might have seen in one of my posts, I usually resort to DIY solutions for my Leitz (and other) lenses - plastic vitamin bottles, PVC tubing, whatever comes handy...

For the collapsible Summicron and Summitar I have metal shades that probably came from some Zeiss lens - or maybe even as a Russian "aftermarket" accessory - marked "42" on the outside, and slips also on my Jupiters... I'd like to have a better lens hood, but at the prices I see on the 'net, I sincerely doubt it - I could get another camera for the price of original 35 or 50 Summicron Leitz lens hood.

So, it's plastic pill bottles and other household items, and Xacto knife, and some black tape
My wife doesn't throw away small plastic bottles and caps any more - she just hands them over to me, for my stash... I'll always find a new use for those

Downright ugly, but they work...

Anyway, here's the photo again...

Thanks for the tip. I just found a spare lens cap for the Industar 50 in the medicine cabinet. The lens I have is a collapsible I-50 not an I-22.

The story on the Fed-2, type D, is while I was bidding on a 40.5 Zeiss-Ikon lens shade for the Zorki 4, I placed a $24.99 bid on the Fed to put it on my watch list. Well 7 days later there was only one bidder for the camera and that was me. The seller was Cupog and the camera he sent is really in nice shape, so it's a keeper. The moral here is if you place a bid on a Fed 2, you will probably own it.

Oh yeah, the Zeiss Ikon shade was only 14 bucks.
