Permanent Zero-in rangefinding

What am I doing in my four Kievs? First of all zero-in rangefinding mechanism, and some minor things to be done when making the primary dis-assembling.

But first of all I am assuring that the already good, zero-in cameras, will stay that way. As described at the Kiev Survival Site, the fixed lens part of the rangefinding mechanism, at the right window (aerial view), may just fall off, or the basis of the moving rf lens fixed by 2 screws may just move. Therefore I am glueing what is to be glued (see again KSS) in my best working camera, the 2a.

All these after my Kiev 4AM workhorse went suddenly out of alignment. Not so suddenly as for the last months it was living all day in my daily backpack (and I am a daily biker !).

I know fixing a misaligned mechanism will drive me crazy. So before offensive, containment !

PS - Seriously, I appreciate your attempts to post here using a language that is not your native tongue. You are far better at English than I am at your language, I am sure. And mostly, I've been able to follow your conversation - I get the 'idea' even if the words are a bit imprecise. But this last post was, well, more than I could follow. Something about welding Kievs to the handlebars of your motorcycle?

Language part II: Ok, for a long time I was in doubt and now you dispell it. When I said "biker" I meant "by bycicle". Sorry for this one, although some decade ago I was a motorcycle biker indeed, until a road accident of cinematographic class put me off-motor for life, and now just cycler.

You're a good guy, Ruben. I'll do my best to try to follow your meaning in the future. Regarding your original topic - I went back and spent some time on the words. I think you are saying that you used glue to hold down the RF adjustment screws in your Kiev so that they don't move. Is that right?

One thing we used to do when we had problems with screws that moved due to vibration (in radio gear) was to use ladies' fingernail polish to do just what you are recommending with glue. Fingernail polish can be easily dissolved with acetone if required later on. We'd use just a spot of polish where the screw head met the mating surface. This would also tell us if anyone else had been meddling with the internals.

I think Ruben is relating a problem where the rangefinder can be knocked out of alignment with rough handling. (ie. rattling around in a backpack or welded to bicycle handlebars)

I had a similar situation with my daily shooter Kiev and have addressed this in the Adjusting Rangefinder document on the Kiev Survival Site where I use a bit of ACC glue to fix screws that may move.

Of course both you and Bmattock are right and refering to the same problem you are so materfully explaining on your KSS.

Just so happens I rode my bycycle to work today and I do have a Kiev in my backpack as well. Might have to rig up something to fasten my Kiev to the handlebars for the ride home.

Our family name "Mattocks" is a derivative of "Madoc" who was a Welsh prince before the Saxons came to England. There are a number of legends about Madoc, including one that he discovered America before Columbus and Leif Erickson, but that's not provable. In any case, Royal blood. But an extinct claim, so I am just as common as dirt.

No, I meant that we have no idea if our illustrious ancestor did or did not discover America. I suspect he did not - England had plenty of good reasons to invent the story so that they could try to enforce a claim to hold lands in the New World against Spain and France. It cannot be proven one way or another, but it is a fun story to enjoy, even if not true.

And the prince part is true, he did exist and I am descended from him, so that's kind of cool. Nobody ever bows or calls me "Your Majesty," though. I should work on that.
