Is the Epson software worth fooling with?

I have CS2 and it picks up the R-D1 stuff as well as it does my Nikon stuff...but some seem to think that the Nikon-specific software gives better color. Are there any opinions about this concerning the Epson software vs. CS2? How steep is the learning curve?

The Epson raw conversion software for the R-D 1 is definitely worth having (especially seeing how it's a free download!)

Even though I use Adobe Camera Raw (ACR -- the raw-conversion guts of CS2) most of the time, it's nice to have the Epson software as a backup/alternative.

One nice thing about it is that its options for raw conversion mirror the ones that can be selected on the camera at shooting time. That makes it very easy to learn if you've already learned the R-D 1's menu system.

Many people also feel that the Epson converter also does a better out-of-the-box b&w conversion than ACR does.

Definitely worth spending some time with it so you'll know what it can do, even if you wind up choosing to use ACR most of the time.

where to download from?

I bought a used R-D1 and it did not come with the software. Does anyone know a reliable download point where I can get the software?

The ones I have tried at the Epson site don't seem to be working.

Thanks.

I just checked the Epson USA site and had no problems. Maybe you just caught them at a bad time.

Getting to the download area is a bit convoluted: You have to start at www.epson.com, then choose North America, then Drivers & Support, then Digital Photography, then Digital Cameras, then R-D 1, then click your operating system under Drivers & Downloads. (Whew!)

I tried that and it only returns a Mac version.

If you want the WinXP version you better select Europe instead of the USA. FRom Europe select whatever country you feel comfortable with (for me that would be the Netherlands). From there follow jlw's instructions.
