Pacific Image PrimeFilm 1800i Film Scanner Question

I bought this scanner because it was so cheap, and 1800ppi is better than my local minilab will admit to being able to achieve. They claim their almost new Fuji Frontier will only go to 1200ppi.

The scanner documentation is very clear (even terse) that I must install the Mr Photo software first, and the CyberView drivers second, and must not connect the scanner to the computer until I've done both those things.

I already have Photoshop Elements, Adobe Lightroom and iPhoto so I really don't want Mr Photo too which I've never heard of.

And I've had problems with drivers in the past. I already have VueScan which works well with my Canon document scanner.

Question is: If I connect the scanner without their software do you think it will work? Do you think it will self-destruct?

All of this is for a modern Apple iMac with OS X Tiger.

I've heard horror stories about this scanner and that's why I didn't get one. I really wish I could help you.

Me too, I heard bad things and good things. But for only €40 I thought I would give it a try.

The Frontier can give 3000dpi scans. Not sure why the lab would tell you otherwise.

I'd install their software before connection, then see what it actually uses after you try it out.

Seems as though Vuescan only needs the Cyberview drivers :

Thank you Norm, so CyberView X then hope that VueScan works with it. The Mr Photo can go in the trash I think.

You're right.

I've had a PI 1800 for about 3 years now and I've never had to use the Mr Photo software. All you need is the Scanning software. Or you can discard this too and
download a Cyberview-X from the PI website.

The vuescan software would work well with it too.

I don't use the PI 1800 much now, as it has been replaced for the most part with an Epson 4180 flatbed/film scanner. The PI 1800 is still used though wheneven I need a portable film scanner to go with the laptop.
