What would YOU bring...?
Scenario:
You are to spend 6 months on a remote, deserted, inhabited island.
Basic food and shelter is taken care of.
You can bring ONE of the above with you... What will it be??

Create a new thread like normal, enter the subject line and the text in the body then at the bottom of the screen check the box for 'create a poll' and hit submit. You then come to a page where you can enter the poll options

Tough Choices Rich.
It's so hard to choose between RF+films and my significant other.
Eventually I've come up with a solution. I would pre-order a M6 and 1000 rolls of film and mail them to the island first.
Then I'll bring my girl there. I don't think my gal will come with me though.
So I'd better do the same thing with cameras and films. Then bring some books with me.
haha...

Well, I am married, so Mr/Mrs Universe isn't a consideration. My wife just wouldn't understand (no matter which one I chose ).
Satellite phone, laptop with satellite connection, daily newspaper, or satellite TV are all sort of the same to me, as ways to keep up with current events (including RFF), and although I try to do that, I don't make that the big part of my life. All have their lure, but since we only have one choice (why did you do that? ), I reluctantly pass on them. Especially since the newspapers would presumably be sent in large mouth wine bottles (see 2nd paragraph below )
I love to read but as I don't get to do as much of that as I would like anyway, and have accomodated to that, I can give that up well enough. Imagine the frustration of having all those photography books and no camera. Again, reluctantly, I pass.
Alcohol I gave up when my kids got high school age as a way to strenthen my lessons on why not to drink alcohol, or to do it responsibly (it seems to have worked, they sometimes indulge, but never to excess). They are both out of college now, but since I am now diabetic, that isn't a consideration for me anymore either. sigh.
Our wonderful pet had to be put down about 3 months ago, so that's out.
OK, that just leaves the rangefinder and my wife. Wow! What to do?
I'll have to get back to you with this one.

Six months is a long time without a woman. That laptop with internet connection would help though.

How big is the island? 100 yards by 100 yards, and I won't even go with all the items on the list?
Very tough choice. Its really down to two items for me.
My wife or the Laptop/Satellite
Laptop with satellite connection.
With the laptop, it would be a Sony with the built in camera. I could keep in touch with my wife, stay current in events, watch movies in the DVD player, listen to music, read books on-line, and exchange photos with my family and friends all over the world. Next best thing to having all the conveniences and interactions at home. If I couldn't keep in touch with my wife/family, then I would have to choose her instead of the laptop.
If the island was big, and worthy of 6 months of exploration, I think a half year vacation with my wife would be wonderful. I assume my kids would be taken care of back on the mainland appropriately during our visit. It would be kind of fun building a nice hut right on the beach, and having all our basic needs met. I would return with a great tan!!
RF and film? Unless there is a photofinisher on the island, the RF and film would only drive me insane. What a way to taunt someone for 6 months!! All those photos captured and no way to see them for 6 months. If it was a Digital RF AND a laptop w/USB cable, the choice would be much harder

Gotta go with the satellite and the laptop. Wifey would not enjoy her time on a deserted island and if I gotta be there on my own, I'd at least like to stay in touch with the rest of the world via computer.
I don't want to be crass, but in the end it came down to the satellite/laptop and Ms. Universe. You can always find porn on the internet, but you can't get your sports scores from Ms. Universe so it was the computer in a squeaker.

remote, deserted island... I guess you meant _un_inhabited. That could be Anarctica instead of somewhere warm ... in that case, I'll take the sat phone so I can call for help!
6 month 2nd honeymoon.. sounds good to me. If I get to bring my wife... does she get to bring the RF + film

Ms Universe vs. Rf camera with tons of fim so possibilty of inadvertant divorce photos, hhhhmmmmm. Half of everything I own vs. a sure heart attack for a fat guy like me. I'd have to say my newspaper. Then if I got bored, I could make paper mache (machier?) friends to talk to and call them all Wilson. Wasn't that a movie???

whiskey. lots and lots of good bourbon whiskey. One thing I've learned living in post-Katrina New Orleans is that almost everything else is optional.

Ah, hadn't factored in the size of the island when I voted for my wife
But really, as brachal says, what good would any of them be without alcohol and lots of it?

One can always make booze. Cigarettes are more difficult !
6 months without a woman though ... I'd take my wife (and she is not watching, Joe).
