Carl Zeiss lens design, literature/link

Lately there were some interesting discussions here about lens designs, types, etc. I've found back a link to CZ lens history, some optics, some evaluation.
Hope you'll enjoy it.

By the way, on the bottom of that looong page, there are some useful links too, esp. the "lens FAQ" seems to answer lots of optics questions for the freaks interested in such stuff(like myself). It's not very user-friendly looking, though

Also a valuable resource is Rudolf Kingslake's book: "AHistory of the Photographic Lens." It's expensive, so try your library first. I got it at my city library; it was also available at area university libraries. It is a nice supplement to the web reference - especially the drawings of lens elements.

Kingslake to Loan

Pherdinand and Mr. Finn,
Thank you for posting this information, it is very interesting. Richard Knoppow, mentioned in the credits, is a regular contributor to the Rollei list and a wealth of information regarding lens design and performance (likely he has forgotten more than I ever hope to know about the subject). Richard recommended the Kingslake book to me a few years ago. If anyone is interested in borrowing my copy to read/scan contact me -- I don't mind if we pass it around (we'll keep track of it on the world map ), sort of like an inner-list library loan.

Guys,

thanks for the Kingslake reference! I just looked up on the library website of our university... they have it available, between other books:

A history of the photographic lens Rudolf Kingslake 1989;
Optical system design Rudolf Kingslake 1983;
Lens design fundamentals Rudolf Kingslake 1978;
Light : its generation and modification Rudolf Kingslake 1965;
Lenses in photography : the practical guide to optics for photographers Rudolf Kingslake 1963;
Applied optics and optical design A.E. Conrady 1957-1960;
Applied optics and optical engineering Rudolf Kingslake 1965

they jave them all available except the second one, which is out at somebody.

I think i'll take a walk to check them out! it's at five minutes distance... i love working at an university!

If i find stg interesting, i'll keep you informed.
