W/NW - Alleyways

Exploring the alleys of cities is one of my favorite subjects to photograph.
Here is one from Providence, shot with a Yashica Lynx 14 and TriX.

Allentown, PA between 19th St. and Buffalo St.

From the 1st roll I shot with a Kiev 4A with J-8M lens three years ago. My first roll of film through an FSU RF.

Really, when were you here? It is a great city for street shooting. Did you photograph when you were here? Like your website.

I was at RISD and then worked a little between 97 and 2001. Lived on the east side at fox point. Really loved that part of the city. Miss the east side pockets on thayer st., they were great! Unfortunately, at the time I was there I didnt have the photo or RF bug yet (I studied Graphic Design by the way). I have some but not many photos from the time. If I find some I'll post em. Havent been in the city since.

Cool, I'd like to see your photos. Yes, East Side Pockets is the best! Im from Massachusetts but moved here to live with my now fiance 5 years ago. My favorite place I think is Taste of India on Wickendon. Oh yeah, Wick Pub too.

Wow, you know, I've looked at that shot a million times over the past 30 years and I really don't remember that being in there. That has to be my brother, I know he was out there with me when I was trying some night shots.

This one had to be Tri-X, handheld at 1/15, probably wide open or close to it.

Never can figure out how to "size" images to get them on this website but here goes with this one.

Normally an "urban shooter" but thought I'd remind all and sundry that not every alley is in a city....

Your US alleys are wider than our main streets

One from this same afternoon (P + Summitar)

I took this one back in June of this year. I had no lightmeter with me. I had only a few seconds to take it before the person walking down the alley would disappear (or somebody else from the building would come out).

Applied basic Sunny/16 rule, quickly adjusted for shutterspeed (max 1/500) and aperture w/2 stop compensation with K2 filter... I'm surprised I got this shot at all.

This is with my 'rangefinder-like' Pentax istDS2 (my R-D1 doesn't like the cold). Just got a used smc-a 50/1.4 and had to rush out to try it. No hood, hence the flare in the upper left. Squeezed this off at 1/15s.

Cheers,
Kirk
