rx100 or Nikon 1?

Know very little about either camera (other than online reviews) and I have the opportunity to get either, but need to decide very quickly, ideally tonight!

My main use would be as a substitute for the family aging P&S digicam, an aging Fujifilm f40. It would also do video recording duty, as a replacement for a camcorder on family vacations.

Does the little Nikon have IQ quality comparable to the RX100? It does not have to beat it, but at least be in the neighborhood.

Which is faster to use in aperture priority mode? Which allows for easiest exposure compensation?

I'm looking for practical day-to-day usage feeedback from member who own either camera or have at least handled both in a shop.

Have briefly handled an acquaitance's V1. I like a camera with a viewfinder, so appreciated the evf. It felt the most responsive of any compact camera I have tried. Fast AF. However bulky compared to a true compact, nice heft to it though. I must say I was impressed. If you have Nikon Afs lenses, you can get an (expensive) adapter which retains AF. With the 2.7 crop factor it would seem a good combination for wildlife photography. I haven't handled the Sony, but have only read good things about it.

I don't know if you want to look into these but the Olympus
digital pen series are terrific. I just got a E-PL1 camera and their
lenses are really nice sharp.

seems to me:
nikon: vf, interchangeable lenses, can use legacy glass, great for wildlife, fastest continuous AF and FPS.
sony: more compact, better IQ esp in low light, better DOF control.

just pick whats important to you. to me, lack of vf is dealbreaker.

Sorry should have specified this was the J1, so no VF.

Had to pull the trigger rather quickly and the choice was limited to the two...so no Olympus Pen, Range.

At the end I picked the RX100 mainly on the strenght of being more compact, though I don't like that it's only 29mm equiv at its widest.

Anyway, I was forced to do things backwards this time due to the time pressure, so now that I've bought the darned thing I'll do my research and if it turns out that it is unsuitable for my needs (unlikely) I'll sell it NIB.

Never used the Nikon V1 but I do recommend the RX100 for it's fast AF and lowlight capabilities. Btw, it also renders color very well.

I think you made the right decision. I used a Ricoh GX100 and loved it. I paired it with a GRD III as a dedicated wide camera. The RX100 has a better lens and much better IQ. The Nikon 1 is an interesting camera but I think you will like what you can do with the RX100 MUCH better without swaping glass. If my GRD III gives up to ghost I would move the the RX100 in a heartbeat. Get a couple of fast memory cards and perhaps an extra battery.
