If you use PS, you can save for web and specify size.

I just save mine as RGB (or grayscale if it's black and white work) with the long edge at 10 inches at 72 dpi.. even saved at high JPG quality, it's less than 100k

Let's say I have a photo stored on my computer that is, say 8 x 10 inches at 300 dpi. If I'm going to upload it to the gallery I'll size it down to 6 or 8 inches wide at 72 dpi and save it as a jpg. In photoshop there is a "save for web" option that will save such a photo in a file of less than 100K.
Understand that any photo you save at more than 72 dpi for the web is a waste because of screen resolution. If you size a photo to 6 or 8 inches wide at 72 dpi it will look as good in the gallery as one saved at 300 dpi.

I'm not sure if the gallery downsamples images to 72 dpi automatically.. but just an FYI, if you send a jpg that's say, 4x6 inches at 300dpi, and someone views it in their web browser, the image size on the screen is determined by the combination of inches and dpi (every pixel will be displayed), thus a computer monitor set at 72 dpi will show the image at an effective 25 x 16 inches.. meaning a lot of scrolling would be necessary to view all of it, and you'd only see part of it at once
thus, it's always a good idea to downsize the image to 72 dpi at whatever actual viewing size you'd like it to appear as (but save your original high-res version on your computer, too!)

Hi Todd
when I import a jpeg into PS 5.0 to adjust size I toggle the tool bar panel labeled 'IMAGE' this drops a menu down from the tool bar. About 2/3rds of the way down there is another panel button 'Image size' ; click on this one and a window opens. This window gives a choice of dimensions by either 'pixel dimensions' or 'print size' in the 'print size' section there is a choice of 'pixels/inch'.
I use 72 pixesl/inch which is the max that are useful with web/screen resolution. I also usually select the long dimension at 750 - 800 max pixel dimension the short side adjusts proportionately automatically. Usually I use 'save as' at the outset this ensures the original is not inadvertantly modified. When all changes are made use the 'save as function' to ensure the original image stays in it's original condition.
Knock yourself out
cheers, Jan

thanks guys, with the newer size limits I was having a hard time posting, I used to post at 100-125 dpi and 4x6 inches. I've always disliked "save for web" beacuse of the color saturation and shadow value shift that takes place but it appears I'll have to live with it.

Along those same lines, I have a heck of a time trying to create avatars that are 19kb or smaller (or 125x125). I've been able to do it once, and I had to rescan the neg to do it.

Todd FWIW I don't use the save for web function. At 800 pixels and 72 all images meet the image 'size' requirements

I never even knew there was a 'save for web' function.. but from what I just read, I'm sure I won't look for it.. once you learn how to resize the image yourself, you realize you have much better control
one good function that I always use when resizing is, after you make the change, use the View>Actual Pixels command.. or just double-click the magnifying glass (same thing).. that'll show you exactly how large the image appears on your monitor
