What agitation for HC 110 ?
Hello,
how much agitation do you apply when using HC 110 B developer ?
I didn't find any inoformation about the recommended agitation for HC 110.
For Rodinal 1:50 I use two agitation every two minutes and for Rollei RHS one agitation every 30 secounds.
Regards,
Thomas

For Rodinal you can go down in agitation but for RHS/AM74 see:
http://www.fotohuisrovo.nl/documentatie/am74_nl.pdf
35mm: 2x every 30S,
120 roll film: 1 every 15S.
For HC-110 I am using the same agitation as AM74/RHS. Like AM74, HC-110 can be used in rotary too.
Then you can cut 10%-12% in time.

Hi Thomas, I always used 5 inversions. every minute. however I now use HC-110 dilution h and far less agitation. 5 initial inversions and 2 inversions at 4 minutes and again at 8 minutes for a total time of 12 minutes. General rule expose for the shadows, develop for the mid tones and agitate for the highlights you want. Useful link.

Thank you for your replies!
I did my first developmet with HC 110 in medium format just 1 hour ago.
Fomapan 400 rated 320, HC 110 B, 6 min, one agitation every 15 s.
The negatives look ok at first glance, I will scan them next weekend and show one or two samples here.

I generally use dilution H with Tmax400 for 11 minutes at 68 degrees. I agitate 30 seconds to start off and then 6 inversions every minute.

Dil E/H, 30 seconds agitation (~13-15 inversions) to start off, then 2 inversions per 2 minutes.

I use dilution B for box speed with trix and Delta 3200. I use dilution H for pulling those films a stop, and for developing SFX, HIE and Efke Aura infrared films. In all cases I agitate for the first minute at the rate of 3 tank inversions per 5 seconds for the entire minute. Thereafter I agitate every 30 seconds for 5 seconds (3 inversions) with a sharp rap at the end of the agitation.
I don't think this is the way it MUST be done, but I do think that you need to arrive at an agitation scheme that works and stick to it. I've been processing these films exactly this way for the past 36 years. I am confident with the results and can predict the contrast and exposure based on this.

I agree Chris. Does not matter how you arrive at the result as long as it is repeatable. HC-110 is a very active developer so even minimal agitation does the job. Consistency is the key though, as in all processing.

Rolling-pin method. Slow rolls across the counter for 10 seconds at the top of each minute (HC-110, dilution B, Tri-X, 5 1/2 minutes).

It depends on how you shoot, what you shoot at (EI) and what you develop in. (and if you are a 'zoner' or more of a 'winger')
I just came back from Turkey, where I shot a whole heap of scruffy dogs and stray cats.
Mostly I was winging it, measuring 18% gray stuff and then trying to think in terms of zones. The light was pretty flat where I shot, so normal development suited most of my photos just fine.
Here are a few photos I took with Tri-X, developed them tonight in HC-110, dilution B for 6 minutes 30 seconds.
My agitation scheme for these was:
1 minute initial slow agitation by inverting the tank on it's head and back -while rotating it.
Then 3 such agitations/rotating motions each minute there after.
I knew I could do that with these, as the light was pretty flat, so I wanted to push the highlights a little further.
Negs look fine, can't wait to get into the darkroom. =)
(Remember, these are scans, so they aren't really representing anything other than tweaked scans, curves adjustments mostly)

I'm using TriX @400 in HC110, 1:100, 21 minutes, agitate first 30 sec then a gentle swirl every 5 minutes, at 22C.

I lean toward John Bragg's approach, w/ less agitation. With both HC 110 h and Rodinal 1:50, I do 30 seconds initial agitation, and then 3 inversions every 3 minutes thereafter.

i also do dilution H: 10 seconds initial gentle swirling with paterson tank/twirling stick, then 5 seconds very gentle swirling at the top of each minute through 9 munites. this is for 10 minutes at 75F for tri-x and hp5. at 72F, same technique for 10 minutes, 25 seconds, with one last gentle swirl at 10 minutes. GENTLE swirling keeps the highlights under control ...
