Roger Hicks -- Author of The Rangefinder Book

Roger Hicks is a well known photographic writer, author of The Rangefinder Book, over three dozen other photographic books, and a frequent contributor to Shutterbug and Amateur Photographer. Unusually in today's photographic world, most of his camera reviews are film cameras, especially rangefinders. Unafraid to compromise ?

The Sony A35 seems a daft choice 'cos the pellicle mirror robs light , and unlike most mirrorless cameras , only Pentax screw manual lenses can be adapted .

The equivalent Nikon 5100 is known to be more competent in most areas .
I could have afforded the Nikon instead of the A35 with additional 55-200 lens plus the inexpensive Nikon 35 f1.8 .

However , like it's predecessor - the minimalist A290 , it suits me .

Best of all is manual metering with the 35 f 1.8 as the EVF provides a pre-view of the effects of altering settings . it also indicates how accurate various white balance settings will be , modern aids which just happen to suit me , as does the extended ISO range 'cos I don't do flash .

The compact size fits my hands with it's echo of my Minolta 404si especially adopting it's strap LOL , makes it all that I need .

In retirement , I can look out for old Minolta lenses - having just picked up for £20 in a charity shop , a circa 1985 Minolta 5000 with 35-70 f4 and renowned 70-210 ' beercan ' . This adds another element to being able inexpensively to extend what to me is an essential hobby as it keeps the ASdee shadows at bay .

Ok , I could do this with most DSLRs , but the Minolta link / continuity is crucial to my ASdee glitch ... and I love the rendition of Minolta lenses ...

i guess , equally daft , is buying a new M8 and using a 1959 J3 ex ltm in genuine Sonnar mount from Brian Sweeney , plus a sparkling little Fed collapsible , surprisingly competent Helios , new CV 35 f 2.5 , creamy Summitar ... but I wanted the digital vintage experience .

So , all that I own is an obvious comprmise from the supposed ' ideal '.
In theory , I could have spent the money much more ' wisely ' especially as the M8 was simply a very expensive indulgence which I still love using , especially with the Contax adapter .

Maybe ' wisely ' is personal each to per own .
