M5 take up help!

I got to the end of the roll in my M5 and the film detached itself from the canister (I had bulk loaded - obviously not very well). I managed to eventually get the film out by removing the take up spool. However I then noticed that the central shaft dangles out of the spool - is this normal?

Try pushing it back down. It's supposed to move.

As in it should flop down if I turn the camera over? I wonder how I never noticed this in the last ten months...

Push it back in. It will be OK.

Yes, it's normal.

It's normal. It's there so you have something to grab to pull the take up spool out. Mine is stiff and doesn't fall down, much. The manual refers to this. It recommends removal and reinsertion so the take up tines are oriented as per the shutter cover diagram. I've still not got the hang of reliably loading the M5.

Interesting! I've never taken mine out a single time. Maybe I should being as I just had my first mis-load the other night

Okay - sounds like it's normal for that to occur. I had just never noticed it before – silly me...

Well, you normally have the camera upside down when the baseplate is off, so it wouldn't dangle out and you wouldn't notice it.

The spool comes out? Who knew. I just use the advance lever to turn the spool a bit.
