Fuji Acros 120 discontinued?

This stuff's been out of stock everywhere for months! I got a notification from B&H that they had some in stock, and it sold out immediately

Anyone hear if this stuff has been officially discontinued?

No, but I'm sure that the typical speculation will inevitably occur anyway...

I bought several rolls at Freestyle 2 weeks ago. They still have it listed as in stock.

I doubt it will be discontinued anytime soon. It is still very popular and a big seller..

It's typically out of stock, but every time I've bought from Adorama anyway. And I've been notified that the film has shipped anywhere from 2 days to a week or two later. Demand is higher than supply. And there are people (points finger at self) that have been hoarding it a bit. This has been the situation at Adorama for at least a year.

Just bought 3 x 5-pack last week here in Manila from the distributor, no word of discontinuation. Though the price went up by more than 20% compared to last year, IIRC...

I bought 20 rolls a few weeks ago from Unique Photo in New Jersey. It had been out of stock for a couple of weeks before that so it seems they sell it out but it is still available. It is currently in stock (www.uniquephoto.com).

This is great news. Thanks for posting. I feel greatly relieved that a staple in my photography didn't suddenly disappear.

I ran down my stockpile of Arcos in 120 to about 15 rolls.

Well, in that case you may as well buy the 5-packs at $15.95.

I ordered a 5-pack from Adorama last week. Arrived the following day. Gotta love Adorama's fast shipping.

By the way, I find it entertaining that you wonder why it's out of stock when you order 20 rolls at a time...

That's exactly what I do, but I usually buy 100 rolls at a time.

Medium format means hungry cameras. 10 rolls in an afternoon is easy, especially where in 6x9 you only have 8 shots. On a good day it can be 20 rolls.

Of course in 135 its less.

Out OF Stock should be no surprise....

Why do people conclude that OOS portends discontinued. If you were running an inventory based business in the current economy, I don't doubt that you would crank your inventory restocking points to "rock bottom".

I'd love to run a business where as soon as the product hits my freight dock, it's sold at the front counter.

The current economy has no room in it for inventory sitting unsold in the cooler. Nor for that matter, re-ordering LARGE quantities. The buyers are fickle and have the same economic problems.... let's see "Film this week" or feed the family?"

Fuji must be loving the demand for ACROS and it's doubtful it will disappear. However, it's their business decision and I am not losing sleep over it. I use a lot of it, but someone always has some inventory somewhere. I go find it. In fact, I often go to eBay and find film sellers that have a large number of feedbacks at 100% positive, and buy from them. I don't think I have ever NOT found fresh film that I was looking for on a highly rated seller on eBay.

Film is going to be more that way as time goes on. We will become gatherer's. Find it and buy it all up (which is why some of us are not finding it) and store it in the freezer. Or, we will be hunters and have to range far and wide to find it when we want some. But if we find some and we just buy small quantities for now, then the next time we want some the hunt begins again.

I think we've reached the end of the road for the people in the distributions chain to continue to store film for individuals who just want 5 rolls of 120. I bet that if you laid a couple of thousand dollars on B&H and told them to hold it and just send film on to you as they get it in, you would find yourself having to buy your own film freezer, as the film would magically appear in it's on production time.

Have you asked B&H if they will take and large amount of money and just hold it for your future needs based on availability. I'd be surprised if they turn you down.

Kuzano,

I'm right there with you: I feel that if you want to shoot a lot of film the only way is to maintain your own stockpile. I am fortunate that I live in NYC and have B&H and Adorama as resources, but in the past there have been times where even Tri-X was not readily available, and the only way to moderate shortages is to hoard a bit of a stockpile as a buffer.

Also when Freestyle has special deals on film that is close to expire, I load up the truck. The last time this happened with Arcos in 135 I bought 300 rolls to take advantage of the reduced price.

Interesting to note that after this hoarding of mine that Arcos begain to be in short supply. Ideally the way the modern economy exists "just-n-time" manufacturing should keep up with demand, but breakdowns do happen. In the Boy SCouts they say: "Be prepared."
