Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Does anyone rent cameras like this so that a shooter can try it out for a day or two before buying one?

I have looked at lensrentals.com to rent a Ricoh GXR for a week or two. They have an M9 available, but not MM. They would nonetheless be the place to check.

Lensrentals told me they would be getting some when the camera starts shipping.

Randy, too bad you aren't in Canada. I'd let you borrow my GXR. It's a very nice camera and the M mount is great!

If the MM was more around $3000... I'd have one on pre-order.

Err... The camera is not even on the market yet. You have been reading about beta cameras in the hands of testers and reviewers. The first ones will be delivered to regular customers in end of July/August.
Rental houses will not even have heard of the camera yet. Maybe there will be one or two for rent next year. As for Leica dealers, it will be quite a while before they will have a spare camera for this kind of testing. For the moment your best bet is to attend one of the product presentation events and try to get five minutes with a camera.

According to my boss (Leica dealer, Montreal), we should receive the first units in August, July if we're lucky.

Now, I'm just waiting for the M Kodachrome...about as serious as this (just kidding)

The Leica store in London has one on display that you can try out in the store. They won't sell it though.

Best bet to shoot with one is to find if there if there is a Leica demo at a local camera store. I got to take a few frames when the Leica Northern California rep showed up at a Bay Area Camera store and was shipped one for 3 days only. He had to immediately give it back.
As jaap infers, it was a prototype.
