Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Had a great street party yesterday and here are some of my best from the day. My new X100 held up really well and the EF-20 flash made a big difference in the changing light.

That IS a cardboard cutout, right? Really had me doing a doubletake.

Something I don't understand -- she was crowned June 2, 1953, right? So doesn't she celebrate 60 years next year? I realize her father died in 1952, but I thought that was in March. So I thought the significance was the anniversary of the coronation.

RiverDog, here's a few of my shots. Shot both the X100 and X10.

RiverDog, i was quite impressed that yoou'd used flash for some of the shots. the flash has blended in nicely. I have a wedding next week (guest only) and was thinking of adding the
flash to my X100.

However, not everyone was a Royal fan.

Anyone else think HRH Prince Philip faked illness to avoid having to endure a concert with Sir Paul and Sir Elton? Hope the old boy comes through OK.

We are celebrating the 60th anniversary of her becoming queen on 6th Feb 1952.
The coronation was not until 1953, it took a long while to plan it.
Some american performers at the Jubilee Concert were singing 'Happy Birthday' so they were even more confused.

OK -- holding the anniversary in February wouldn't work, no doubt. Still, rather confusing since it's tied to the date of the coronation.

Kuvvy, I have never shot so much flash in my life. I was impressed with the X100 TTL fill-flash capabilities and I knew I was going to either be in high contrast light or flat light, so I wanted to punch into the shadows a bit more. You will need to watch the EV - I had it turned down 2/3rds on the flash and on the camera many times.

Nearly all my shots were with the flash and I think this one is a really good example of what it can do for a portrait.

I think it would be excellent for a wedding. You can check out the others on the party Flickr page

Just ordered the flash online. I must admit I'm not really a big flash user but thought it may be some use at the forthcoming wedding. I found the light very harsh yesterday with subjects in both bright sun and dark shadow. It never even occurred to me to use the built-in flash. When shooting people on the streets you tend to try not to be noticed even though everyone was having fun and probably wouldn't have minded. Maybe next time I'll remember to give it a try.

Good move. It's just the same for me but it's time to try some new approaches that digital allows more conveniently than with film. I hope to make a little money this year with parties and the odd wedding (at a very competitive price). People like the oomph and bling factor more than I am used to getting with street photography which, as you say, is more discreet.
