Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

I could only laugh at that summicron price tag if that wouldn't mean that the current summicron-M is going to be discontinued, and all decent 50 f/2 lenses are going to go crazy.
How are they going to sell this one when you can buy about two sumiluxes and ten planars with it?
I sometimes wonder what type of pissing contest Leica is running right now...
I know the argument "you don't like it, don't buy it". It has its merits, but its limits too, and these have been happily crossed once again.

Won't be a Bayer sensor, if monochrome only. Will provide significantly more resolution and ISO performance than a Bayer sensor will provide, so it makes a ton of sense for folks that really only like to shoot B&W.

Wise they have chosen to do the dinner first. Most would have choked at the new summicron price otherwise.

I believe you're right. I just tried and it wouldn't open. So the files from the monochrome camera must be in sRGB or similar.

My buddy is the east coast rep for Phase One. When I told him about this Leica prospective BW sensor he was not surprised. He said the P1 monochrome sensor is very popular for science and "art" use.

For $9k, you can have a M9 that finally competes at high ISO with every full-frame DSLR from the last five years!

Interesting, iso 320 as base iso. What's the technical reason for that?

The sensitivity to light is twice that of the M9 with a colour filter array - i.e. the sensor wells fill up faster because there is no filter absorbing light.

Got to be wrong. Last time I looked the 50 lux - really great ASPH lens - was $4000!

increased sensitivity from not having a color filter sitting in front of the sensor eating up light, most likely.
