Ignorant question, is the x1 (and future x2) built in germany or in developing countries where labor is dirt cheap? Seems hard compete with the Sony's of the world when significant differences in labor standards are allowing those mfgs to charge a lot less because they pay a lot less to their assembly line workers. Something to think about...though I still can't afford to sometimes buy the "right thing".
I'm also not a fanboy or arguing that $3k is close to the actual costs, just wondering really.

Most of Leica's 'mechanical' metal labor is done in their Portugal annex. Then the electronics are added and fine-tuned in Germany.

The difference between the f2.8 lens of the X1 and the rumored f1.4 lens of the X2 is potentially immense and worth paying extra for. I would give it serious consideration if the X2 was the same size as the X1 and has a great full frame sensor. Otherwise, you can get the Fuji X100 for 1/3 the price or the Fuji X Pro 1 for 2/3 the price.

Whoops I jumped on that rumor too soon.... Leica Rumors is now predicting that "the new Leica X2 will probably have the same 28mm Elmarit lens as in the X1"

Don't worry, you can start a better rumour yourself. Or just wait a few more hours to see what they announce.

So - the X2 is out - it is pretty much X1 with ability to take on a 1.4 Mpix EVF and 16 Mpix sensor. Lens is the same, body shows nearly no differences. Price will probably go up. Screen has the same 230k pixels.
Personally - I like that Leica kept the small form factor, but I would have liked to see more updates to the X1 (which IQ wise is great). I hoped that Leica will remove the AA filter from X2, but that does not seem to be the case.
Let's see about the performance ...

Yes, let us wait and see about the performance. I love the compact form that fits in my pocket.
Does anyone know if the ISO performance is any different to compensate for the same 2.8 lens?

It's hard for me to see where this fits in the market... used M8s sell for less... new X100/Xpro1s sell for less... X1s are going to go for less now... I may be missing something, but I can't figure out who would want an X2.
Then again, I guess it is possible the performance (resolution/iso/????) is going to be dramatically different than the X1?
Strange times..

No in-built vf, no care. Especially when a competitor camera has a superb OVF/EVF arrangement for under half the price.
imo.

Refer to Pentax K-5, K-01, Nikon D7000, D5100, Sony NEX-5N, NEX-C3, a580 and numerous other cameras for reference on sensor performance.
Finally Leica's putting the red dot on this two-year-old Sony 16MP sensor, which will see replacement this summer.
Truly good sensor it is, though.

The other problem is probably the AF on the X series. Won't know until it's been widely available to users...

They needed to update the optics too. F=2.0 or 1.4. I'd still rather have an x100 or x-pro 1... Sad thing...

As much as I like the X1, and no other compact digital camera will get me to purchase them, I am underwhelmed and puzzled about the X2. IMO, there were three things that needed to be changed:
1. Faster lens
2. Higher resolution
3. Built-in viewfinder
We got....one of those.
Resolution? Meh...we'll take the higher res...
But the kicker is the 2.8 lens. The lens, when extended, makes the X1/X2 virtually the same size as my IIIF with the Industar 26. Not pocketable. Then, adding the VF, now EVF, it is a large camera...not so good. And then the 2.8 aperture....the camera is soooo good it deserves at least a 2.0.
Why is it so hard to change the lens? I can live with a brightline VF but the lens is too slow to compete with the competition.
Still, the image quality of the X1 is very, very good. I suppose the X2 will be as well. I can certainly live with the X1, I like it that much, but a golden opportunity was missed. Sure, the X2 has been improved somewhat over the X1.
And I don't even care about the price, but, I remain underwhelmed and confused.

I expected the X2 to have at least a 2.0 lens and a built-in EVF/OVF. Sometimes, it's difficult to understand what Leica is doing, yes it's a mystery. If the EVF is similar to what Panasonic has, it's surely not up to par with what the market may want. Olympus and Fuji has already shown that they can do it and very good at that.

Too bad it didn't come sporting the equivalent 35/1.4 that was rumored...
I think it will appeal to a market segment that wants an automated Leica, demands high IQ, and has disposable income.
This is not a camera for enthusiasts.

I love my film Leica and my old Cron, but the X2 is a camera with a spec from 3 years ago with a price of the dollar in 2050.

Viewfinder looks dumb and inelegant, as does the hot shoe. Original X1 style was much better, which you could place a CV finder in and it would look better.
Luckily it still says Leica.

How hard would it be to actually have a 35 1.4 upgrade on the X2? Is it feasible without changing anything at all? Not that Leica would do it but for a price they might.

I'm satisfied to know that there is no major reason to upgrade from my x1 which I still love a lot...
robert
PS: the only advantage I see is due to the higher megapixel counts which would allow more cropping possibility, interesting when you do not have a 50mm .
