Raw on camera preview issue
Hi everyone.
I've a doubt I want to share with you, in search of suggestions.
I've used my RD1 with its original battery and I recently (last week) found out that :
1- If I shoot RAW I cannot review my shot on camera. Anyway the shot is fine on LR3. If I shoot RAW+JPEG I can see the preview.
2- I see a consistent underexposure when shooting with any lens. A full stop under.
I guess the battery is giving odd voltage on the camera since these problems don't come out with other third part batteries.
Am I guessing right or is there some other cause I could consider?
Thank you. Regards.

If you are only getting these problems with the original battery, then that may be the cause. I have never experienced the display problem you mention. However, it is well reported that the R-D1 tends towards underexposure - my original R-D1 was almost always 2/3 to a stop under and my current one is similar.

That is odd.
It turns out no camera I know of displays a histogram computed directly from the raw data. They all use a jpeg in some form. On Nikons the user's jpeg settings affects what they see in the display.
If somebody knows of a camera that displays a histogram directly from the raw image, please let me know.

I think common on the exposure issue. |

I think common on the exposure issue.
I've owned various DSLR cameras on which I have corrected exposure with a plus or minus setting in exposure compensation. I do use a hand held meter much of the time. I usually always have one with me.... A Gossen Luna Pro SBC. I think your experience here is not all that uncommon.
I do think however, it's more often mentioned by those with a critical eye on exposure. If more people checked their in-camera meters against a good hand held meter (tested and calibrated), we'd hear more of this.
It's one of the reasons why understanding exposure latitude differences on film and dynamic range on digital is important to understand.
Remember that film was often corrected by setting a slightly lower/higher ASA than the speed rating on the canister, for various film camera's?

Thank all of you. I agree it's a common thing and I reviewed my pictures for more hints. I'll check the exposure issue by matching two shots: one taken with the rd1 metering and the next taken with my lunasix 3s.
Anyway I'm getting more and more convinced that there is something wrong with the battery since I can preview my shots in RAW mode with other batteries and (I forgot to mention it at first) I'm getting black shots from time to time with that battery... Time to meet the trash bin?

If you look up Rich Cutler's R-D1 resource site now hosted by the head bartender Stephen (Cameraquest) you'll find information as to how the metering works on the R-D1. It does indeed have a tendancy to underexpose, because most of us meter and focus to the centre of the image. The R-D1 has a sort of centre weighted metering, but it is biased towards the lower left. Meaning that if your main subject material is anywhere else you will get underexposure, unless of course you know how the camera meters and compensate for it. Now you do, and now you can.

Battery change sounds like the answer to your questions.

A little update: I found out that pressing the lcd "on" button while the red light is still flashing is the cause that compromise the preview of raw files on camera display.
Have you experienced something like that before?

I'm pretty sure my R-D1 has Jpeg and Jpeg+RAW modes, not a RAW only...
