Birthday Give Away

It's my birthday today and to mark the special anniversary I'm prepared to give away a Leica IIIa body no: 3164xx.

I picked it up a year or so back but have never used it and can't see myself doing so in the future. It's 1939 vintage and doesn't look bad for the age. The shutter could sound a lot worse but the B setting isn't working, or at least I don't think it is. The rangefinder patch is there but could be better. All in all I think a service might be needed.

The body is available to GB members in the first instant - to a 'well posted' member who makes some sort of reasonable case for owning it. Leave a post in this thread and pm.

I don't want the Leica IIIa, but...

In the spirit of the day, I have an OM-2S with a 28/2.8 lens on it that is definitely a user, and the lens has a bit of haze. I haven't used it so I can't say how it impacts things, but the meter works and seems to be accurate.

If you want it, say so in the thread, and be prepared to give something away as well! If I give you the Olympus, you have to give something to someone else. Seems fair

It just sits around and I haven't seen fit to use it since I've gotten it, and I don't see it happening anytime soon. I'm moving soon, so it needs a home!

i would love it. i have a couple of olympus stylus epic's that i dont use. both are the fixed lens 2.8. i seem to remember one of them having some sort of weird lens flare/light leak. i never did any research to figure out what it was though.

Happy birthday John. What an excellent and generous thought - to make someone else's day on your birthday. Hope whoever gets it posts some shots taken with it on here.

Nice. Have a very happy birthday.

I don't think I've ever witnessed anybody giving away something on the occasion of their own birthday.

Hopefully one day I can do that. With a very thoughtful gift --which is exactly that, amongst RFFers-- such as yours.

I've had one taker for the IIIa but they live in the US and not GB.
I think there are could be significant costs posting over the 'pond' so originally suggested RFF members in GB in first instance, with European members at the back of my mind if there were no takers here.
So I'm going to let things run for a while to gauge response, and then get back to interested parties.
Thanks to everyone posting me best wishes for today.

Happy Birthday!

I'm relatively new here so I dont really expect to receive the camera but I come here everyday and read the posts; most of the time I dont feel experienced enough to speak but I am growing in confidence the more I shoot and learn, have only been doing this for a year, this forum is the reason I got myself an M3 and Jupiter lens. All I can say is I would love to receive the cam and I would make good use of it and keep hold of it until I eventually felt it time to part with and gift it to someone who would also appreciate it. My mum and brothers joined together to get my dad a IIIc for Christmas as he has always wanted a Leica and now I am seriously jealous of him with his old Barnack and he is really enjoying it

Anyway congrats to the lucky recipent!

Cheers, Richard

Hi, I would be willing to take it off your hands – on the understanding I would pass it on myself to someone in two years as my own birthday gift to someone. I don't feel that I 'need' it (it would allow me to try a barnack which is something I would like to do one day) and so would be happy to see someone more 'qualified' to take it! Hope you have had an excellent day, my own birthday was just a few weeks back!

All best,

~S

Hurrah. I think this is wonderful way to celebrate your birthday. My 40th is coming in a few weeks, and I might have to follow your excellent example. I'll have to dig around through my stuff and see what goodies need new homes. Happy birthday!

That's an awesome way to celebrate! Happy Birthday!

If ever there were an US version of jesse1dog, I'd jump at the chance to really own a Barnack, as I've been using a IIIf that's not mine, and, of course, falling in love with its fully manual-ness. (probably because it can't be mine )

A wonderful thing to do...I can make no claim to it, but really appreciate the sentiment, sort of puts things in perspective.

Perhaps we should all think about offering 'something that must be useful to someone' from time to time...now where's the remains of that Kiev???

A very nice gesture...

I also often think that we possess way too much gear (not only camera and lenses, just look at our homes). Giving away is a sane reaction .
I should do that myself more often.
