A simple comparison between Nikkor 35mm f1.8 & Canon 35mm f1.5

These are very simple test shots. Nikkor 35mm f1.8 and Canon 35mm f1.5 all in Leica screw mount on R-D1s. RAW save as JPG. No PS.

Nikkor 35mm f1.8 f5.6 focus on the middle film box.

Canon 35mm f1.5 f5.6 focus on the middle film box.

The stones in front of the track seem just a tad sharper with the 1.8.

With a little higher contrast and warmer color rendition, IMHO.

Unsure what your point is.
I could understand the comparison if the lenses were interchangeable from system to system. But as they aren't, what difference does it make?

Kevin,

thanks for posting. I was looking at the Nikkor 35/1.8 or the Canon 35/1.5 on my m body. And the price range is roughly the same, the 1.5 being a tad more "collectible" than the 1.8. But you images prove that the Nikkor is an excellent performer.

Both pics look alike to me.

Why shoot pics at F5.6 where most lenses look alike? Why not shoot some pictures at F1.5 and F1.8?

I can only guess, but some people have multiple systems, and if they want to buy yet another exotic 35mm lens, will it be a 35/1.8 Nikon or a 35/1.5 ....

that's all.

Thanks for all your guys comments here!

I am sorry that I only post two test shots here and without any conclusion. Actually this is the first time that I try to do some comparison among some lenses. Yes,I try to shoot some pictures at f1.8 and f1.5. But the light is too strong outside and I have limited time to do this comparison. So I cannot completely finish this job. I will upload more pictures in the next week.

Wish you guys can give me some advice about how to test different lenses.

Cheers,
Kevin

I would say to shoot comparisons wide-open, use a tripod or other lockdown method and crank the ISO down close to low as it will go.

Great effort and Thanks!

Thanks Nokton48!

Yeah. I also find that the Nikkor shot is a little higher. I will try to keep them in the same position next time.

Wide open! Bokeh! Yes,I will also show them next time.

Cheers,
Kevin

Very helpful test. As others said, it would be interesting to see both lenses also wide open, and both lenses at f/2.
