That's the first time I saw the new prism hump vs the removable EVF (I have the E-P2).

BIG difference!
I won't sell my E-P2 because of its pen heritage (and my wife likes it). But my E-620 is toast fer shure.

I can only think of another system with a kit 24mm-at-the-wide-end lens: Contax N1. And it didn't have a $1300 price tag.

It looks nice and i really hope it's a success for Olympus. Is it just me or are there suddenly a lot of GAS inducing cameras on the market? I guess holding and shooting this camera will be the real deciding moment, I shoot left eyed and find some cameras just too akward to actually live with. I also have big hands and will actually need the extra grip on offer.

I don't think it's necessarily an either/or choice. Aside form cost/economics (not inconsequential, I admit,) one could keep an OM body or two and have an E-M5, use OM glass via adapter on the E-M5 as well as any m4/3s lenses.

Should I decide to get an OM-D, I will sell off excess OM bodies and lenses, plus some other gear, and shoot with 2 OMs, and OM-D, 3 or 4 OM primes and one or two m4/3 lenses.

These high ISO samples are awfully impressive, compared to previous m4/3 cameras. And they are JPEGs no doubt.

it sure does Will! and tbh i still dont get the insane contax n prices. as for this beauty, olly hit every thing on the pro wanna be's wish list, every single one down to the freakin' thumb rest. the only way they couldve hit a bigger home run is if it was FF. of course those sample iso3200 images really do need to be as noise free as the x100. if so, wow!

My 5D MkII came with the 24-105 :-) (full frame) That's the "kit" lens.

Not only does it appear from specs to be an impressive cameras, but the retro aspect comparison is awesome:



This image is of one of my well used OM2S programs. I have a number of OM's that have been well used for years now. Comparing this image, particulary with the battery grip shows what great design work went into this OM-D (E-M5). The top deck has almost identical placement of dials/buttons on both cameras, with the exception of the wind lever, which has been compensated for by the thumb grip on the back or the OM-D.

How close are weight and dimension. The OM2S with 50mm lens weighs 510 grams. The OM-D body only weighs 425 grams. Width of the OM2S is 136mm, Width of the OM-D is 122mm. (one half inch difference)

This is going to be my next camera purchase. My fiirst OM-1 film SLR ws purchased new in 1973. I have been shooting Olympus 4/3 DSLR's since the E-300 and the last Oly M4/3 E-PL1 purchase a while back.

I have a running challenge going with a friend who uses Canon Rebels models. I have been kicking Canons ass on IQ with my Oly DSLR comparable mp ratings, using kit lenses only. I even outshot the Rebel XSI (12 mp) with my E-520 10mp 4/3.

My friend quit letting me use his rebels for comparisons (Hmmm?) So I purchased a Canon T2i and outshot it with my Oly E-PL1. Sold the Canon at a loss of $50 in 45 days. Shot two car shows, carrying both rebel and e-pl1 and shot simultaneously.

This new sensor with more Mp and better ISO numbers and the improved processing engine should show considerable improvement.

It's on my "will do this list" and my only other digital will be the venerable kodak sensored E-1. I will also buy the grip. I loved that grip on the OM series cameras, and it looks like the retro grip on the OM-D is the re-incarnation of that original grip.

I would guess it's more a response to the x100. Olympus SHOULD have been the first to make this traditional/hybrid style of camera, and they SHOULD have brought it out soon after the e-p1, but they were slow to progress and didn't read the market correctly, and so were beaten by fujifilm.

Better late than never though, and I haven't gotten tired of looking at the om-d yet!

I too miss dedicate shutter dial, but as i'm looking at the top there's probably not enough space for it. As about the camera - Olympus finally did something right. That thing is soooooo nice. Put two pancake lenses on it and you'r ready to go. Oh and my zuiko 50 1.4 will make a really nice portrait lens

As nice as this little jigger is, and I'd definitely have one, it chips away at what we frequently seem to fight for around here ... and that's film's future.

When I see RFF folk, whom I know to be fairly die hard film users, frothing at the gills over these digital marvels I feel a little sad. Cameras like this aren't really killing film directly but they're certainly giving more and more people less reason to bother with the analog process!

Forgive me if someone else has already said something similar, I only just started reading this thread.

The absolute joy of the film OM's was the amazing viewfinder, huge, bright and lovely to look through.

Even the best EVF I've seen (Sony A77) is pathetic by comparison, so it can have all the retro charm you can muster, but it's never going to have the original appeal of the OM's as a camera to enjoy looking through.

Nope, you're not the only one. I can live with it though. When I let the camera make the exposure decision I'm almost always in aperture preferred mode, so it's not a big deal.
