Canon 40mm Lens Hood - ID required
Hi all, I've found this in my bookcase drawer. I must have had it for many years but I don't think I've got anything that it fits since I have no Canon RF gear at all. I used to have a canon 25mm screw lens a long time ago, but not any bodies.
I don't think it fits anything but canon, am I right ?

I believe that Canon was the only one using 40mm filters rings. This looks like a two-part adapter, probably holds a series VI filter in between the ring and the hood. That would solve someone's problem of getting odd-ball 40mm filters for their 50mm or 35mm Canon lens.

Hi Brian,
Yes it appears to be a lens hood that holds series VI filters. It's in two parts that unscrew to hold the filters.
The hood part says
Canon Japan SERIES VI CANON LENS 50mm f:1.8 35mm f:2.8 35mm f:3.2
The ring part says
Canon Japan SERIES VI 40mm
The threads are undamaged and it's well used but still fully functional.

yeah, looks like the one for 50/1.8 and 35/3.2 etc.
the adapter is sized 40mm but can be exchanged for other iszes if you have them.
worth 10 to 50 bucks depending on how much the buyer wants it.
i have one left that i don't use but it's the one that saved my p by taking the brunt of the fall last year. it holds a place of honour and will always have a secure and safe place at my home.
sniff...

Hi Joe, good to hear from you, are you recovered from your trip to the camera fair ?, we've got one coming up locally 16 oct. I expect the RFF (Bham UK chapter) will attend in force.
Would you say this canon hood is a fair swap for a VC square hood for a VC 25mm, if I could find anyone with a surplus item ?
Regards John C.

it was a slight let down just cause of size.
i was hoping for a smorg of delights but it was more like deli.
not sure what the vc hood goes for but i'm guessing someone here would like the canon hood.

The CV hood goes for $45 US new. Clean up that Canon hood with its unique 40mm threads and who knows, you may find a match.

Actually, Minolta (Chiyoko) made some lenses in LTM for their RFs that have 40mm filter rings.

I bought an example of that hood , with two filters and a leather case, on ebay a couple of months back. From memory I paid US$27 plus postage, which i thought was fair. I have seen them fetch more than that, since.

I just disvored that my round black clamp-on hood "Canon 1.5/50mm" (40mm as well) snipped the outer edges of slides when I use it with my 2/35mm (which is a bit backlight-sensible). Framed slides are fine, I discoverd it with unframed slides. Just the edges are blackened at f/8 or F/11.
Strange thing that Canon made a different shade for the 1.8/50mm, both lenses beeing parallel in production and looking like enzygotic twins (have them both). Probably it's a bit narrower so this for no help for my 2/35 either. Anyone seen a special hood for the 2/35 yet??
cheers, Frank

I have been looking to buy a Canon hood for my 50mm f1.8, do you plan on selling that hood, Hektor? PM me if you do.

The vented 40mm hoods made by Walz/Hoya "For Canon" (intended for the 50/1.8) are short enough to work w/the Canon 35/2 without vignetting.

Frank,
I've also used the 50/1.8,35/2.8 Canon hood on my 35/1.8. I haven't noticed any vignetting with it, although I haven't used the combo extensively.
