Solid Disc to Replace Meter on Rollei TLR

Do they make a little replacement metal dial that can be swapped out with a bad meter on a Rolleiflex E? Anyone got one to sell me and has anyone done this themselves?

Right, I just don't want a open hole in the side of the focusing knob....

It has not adversely affected my Rolleiflex and is not noticeable, but was disconcerting at first.

Try using the plastic cap from an Ilford film can. Fits perfectly.

I've done it myself.

ha ha, don't discount the Ilford cap. With its black dull matte finish, it looked like it was made for the Rollei focus knob.

Okay, there was a Rollei metal cover, with an ASA dial, that was a plain cover for the knob without meter. I've seen them on other Rollei models, and once in a while see them for sale on ebay. It fit on, with tiny set screws.

Oh, try contacting Don at dagcamera.com. He also sells old Rollei parts. I'd bet he'd have the Rollei metal cover for the focus knob, for sale.

Will removing the meter result in a significant weight reduction?

Na I just hate having a dumb broken meter on it. This is for purely cosmetic vanity reasons.

Looks like it's a standard part. This is identical to the OEM part on my 3.5 E3 which was manufactured without a meter. Link below:

I agree, a camera with a not working part is just not good, very annoying. No sarcasm intended.

Two screws at the meter knob hold it on.

Then take the Ilford plastic cap to a machinist and pay him to make a replica out of brushed nickel or something.

It works well - looks good, better than I thought -- lower profile than a dead meter too! I had to purchase Ilford for the first time in years...yuck haha.

Used a little tape, mine ran a little small. Did you do anything fancy to attach yours?

Thanks for the tip!

Mine too has a broken meter and I've been looking for a replacement to plug the meter hole. I do have an Ilford cap handy but like Frank said... it's just slightly loose. Any good techniques to get it to stay in there (albeit not permanently, since I still want to look for an original plug)? I'm considering super glue, but it seems like something could go wrong very easily if I took that route...

Please keep super glue well away from cameras. It will out gas for a long time and can cause damage to optics. It can be really bad news. You'd be much better off with contact adhesive if you must use some kind of bonding agent. It's generally easily removed from a non-porous surface later, if required, too
Regards,
Brett

I just wrapped a few layers of tape to build up the thickness of the inner flange of the cap. Sticky black paper Scotch photo tape (yes, the real thing, try B&H) worked well, I trimmed it to be about 1/4" wide. Once I got enough wrapped on, I jammed it into place. It holds, is removable, and cheap.

If anyone finds a cache of flat meter covers I'd like the get the OEM part too.

Thanks

I used a black lens cap on mine. Can't remember the size, but you could measure it. It was one of those double pincher caps, and it looked like it was a factory job.

I decided it looked good enough to just glue it in there. No problems thus far...

Agreed but what kind of glue is best?

I used "Loctite super glue control liquid" and it's been in there ever since. I think it's problem solved! I just applied a thin layer around the circumference of the first inner "ledge" in the focus knob and stuck the cap in.
