Tessar 18cm f/4.5

Hi Brian and loyal readers of same....

Anybody know what's up with this? Medium format for Zeiss TLR? A 4X5 lens? Serial number by my calculation puts it at 1925.

I'd guess 4x5 coverage (maybe 5x7) given that its a 180mm. Hard to say though without either finding a reference to the lens or testing the coverage.

That's a barrel lens, commonly used on 9x12cm/4x5"/10x15cm focal plane shutter SLRs - a widespread press camera type at the time, made by many British and German makers.

You'll find all kinds of combos like that from Zeiss in the 1920's - tessars and triotars from around 75mm up to 210mm. Zeiss (and some other manufacturers) seems to have built them with custom barrels and mounts, depending on what people wanted. I have a 210mm f/3.5 Triotar from around 1925 that was built into a 35mm Exakta mount barrel by someone. It's a beast...
