Not many 50mm f1.2 Noctilux lenses were made, and even less boxes available. So this makes sense to me: if you seek it, and you have the money, then you buy it. Case closed.

I bet what happened was:
Somebody on heavy coffee surfing eBay, thinks he sees nocti, and throws in a lowball just in case....
I bet we'll see that box again

In that museum they can have a case with a pair of cheap supermarket scissors, the partially opened transformer/hard drive/pocket calculator still trapped inside the incredibly strong tansparent plastic with jagged edges, one component of the product still irretrievable in one corner of the intact packaging, another broken in half abut still trapped, and several band aids artfully arranged in front of it, with a piece of torn skin and some drops of blood and a picture of a dented floor board where the whole lot had been hurled in disgust during the extremely brief ownership of the original purchaser. The label to that case might explain the phenomenon. Certainly there's no satisfactory expalanation in this century.

It's not sleazy, it's business. I'm sure you've never been to China or Thailand.
A box is extremely hard to fake in small quantities. A tiny label is easy.

Agreed. This seller has buy it nows WITHOUT immediate payment required. Thus, ebayers often scan for deals, might have misread this listing, clicked buy it now and then later realizes the error and never pays. Thats my guess at least.
Maybe its a collector who knows box + lens might increase its value ... but if the serials dont match then a big gamble imo

Not just boxes here - http://www.museumofbrands.com/background.html - but all sorts of packaging.

I could have had this lens for 1200 Euro a few weeks ago, but I did not buy it... maybe I was wrong.

Maybe yes. I had and still have no idea what that lens sells for....I did not want it for myself, so I did not buy it.
Really sorry, maybe better no one tells me, what that lens is worth. If I see the case only for 2k selling (fake?) I just would like to forget the story.
EDIT: Sorry, I was wrong. It wasn't a Noctilux 1.2/50mm. It was a Noctilux 1.0/50mm. Made in Canada. So, I guess it sells for less. Right?

World's most expensive cardboard box?
I wonder if they just stuck an address on it and took it to the post office.

Someone gave me an idea - ballon has to be added to package, so owner can put it in and take out of box, just like Winnie Pooh did with an empty pot and balloon. Should make a great gift!
