got the firmware upgrade done ...

... thanks to my wonderful, magnificent bride who speaks/writes geek. now i have macro mode, should i want to shoot a flower or something ...

Paul,

not sure why would a firmware upgrade have anything to do with macro mode being available. This has always been available from day one.

I agree ... I think what has happened is you've had the function wheel locked without realising it and after an upgrade all settings go back to default!

If you press the centre button of the function wheel and hold it for several seconds it locks it ... repeating the process unlocks it!

well, in any case, one of the features of the upgrade is easier focusing for macro; at least, that is what it says. whatever the reason, it works! i managed to re-silence the shutter noise and stuff like that. it's coming along nicely, i think. the photos i made today look exactly as i pictured them in my mind. the cam's meter is amazing. i was shooting in autumn light in high contrast situations.

Yeah I find this as well - it's uncannily accurate. Moreso than the canon 1d's I've used!
