X100 1.20 Firmware update (this is a big one!)

1.Some functions, which can be set to "Fn" button and shown as "Fn BUTTON" in SET-UP menu, can be also set to RAW button. After pressing the command dial to right in the SET-UP menu of "Fn BUTTON", "Fn" and "RAW" are displayed and each of selectable them,
Also, by holding down RAW button for more than 3 seconds, same type of selection menu for RAW button is displayed, just as short-cut procedure.
2.By selecting in "ISO" menu in the shooting menu, either ISO sensitivity value or "ISO AUTO CONTROL" can be selected.
3.When AF MODE is set to "AREA" in Single AF (AF-S) mode, active focus point is zoomed in (magnified to approx 5x) by pressing center of the command control.
4.When "ND FILTER" is set to "Fn" button or "RAW" button, setting between ON ("ND" is displayed) or OFF ("ND" is NOT displayed) can be changeable by pressing "Fn" button or "RAW" button, which is set for "ND FILTER".
5.When the image is shot with vertical angle of the camera and played back the shot in the LCD, the image is displayed with whole area of LCD even after pressing "playback zoom in" button.
6.When the human face is shot, the detected face is displayed during the playing back, and pressing the command dial to down, detected face is magnified during displaying.
7.AE control system and AF performance including AF speed has been improved for movie recording mode.

YAAAAAH!!!! They fixed all of the minor problems I have with this camera. Unless I can think of any else LOL!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm feeling a little smug at how great this little camera and Fujifilm's support with it has been! It's now at the point where all the anti-x100 sourpuss's have nothing to bitch about anymore!

Yeah, Fuji has been great. Wish they would be as awesome with their C-print archival films as they are with this camera...

It appears that manual focusing is significantly faster. Not as fast as it should be, still, but certainly improved. I didn't see that on the list.

MF is definitely a bit faster - at least in indoor light. I'm fairly sure the AF has been quickened up a tiny bit as well - seems snappier again (last firmware they definitely did the same).

'Sourpuss's' is stretching it a little Gav. This camera has generally had a lot of support around here with less than the usual amount of detractors considering the high profile pre-release hype IMO.

If you want to see some sourpuss's ... wait until the M10 gets here!

Well, there's still one thing, but there's obviously nothing to be done about it: Why, oh why, couldn't they have done a mechanically linked focus ring, with distance scale, like on the Pentax DA Limited pancake lenses, instead of the fly-by-wire focusing they went with??

Edit: If they'd done that, so scale/zone focusing is really usable, then there'd be no reason, IMO, to ever put down the X100 until you needed a different focal length lens!

Just a question concerning the update. Is it practical to simply download the update directly onto a freshy in-camera formatted card, instead of using the cable? Thanks, all.

Yes, it's much more practical than Fuji's website instructions. I just download the file, put it onto a formatted card, start the camera in update mode, and update it.

first, thanks gavin, the update is great! though i dont understand why 'updating' has to blow out all camera settings including date/time...gosh!

also re above quote, i think there are two issues being collapsed into one. up until this update the 'fly by wire' manual only focusing has been virtualy worthless. this update makes my manual only focus much more 'useable', though probably not as 'useable' as if it were mechanical. there were always 'workarounds' like having cam in MF, pushing AFL button to achieve AF, then if necessary 'fine tuning' by turning focus ring. i will still probably use this as my primary focus method.

however the above quote called 'zone focusing' useless, and that it certainly has not been. using the 'blue line' on the bottom of vf distance scale (which indicates 'zone of focus for a given aperture), i have found zone focusing extraordinarily easy and effective. the blue line changes, expanding or contracting, as you change your f stop. moving the focus ring clearly moves along the blue line to whatever distance range you want. you see it all play put right there without lifting your eye from the vf! much easier than film to me, and has always been so on the X.

IMO, that's not a great method for zone focusing. I want to be able to set focus before bringing the camera to my eye, so I can quickly bring up the camera, frame and shoot in 1-2 seconds -- using OVF only. It's possible to do that using the LCD in eye-detection mode, but I prefer to have LCD off in shooting mode, and only use it for image review. And, unless the new firmware makes an order-of-magnitude improvement, there's no comparison in speed and convenience of setting focus directly vs. by peering at an electronic readout -- for sake of argument, I'll ballpark it at 2 seconds vs. 20 seconds. So the X100's capability for manually setting zone focus may not be useless (and I didn't say it was), but it's not very usable for the way I (and probably many others) would like to zone focus.
