Arles 2011

The Rencontres ('meetings') are the biggest gathering of fine art photographers in the world, in a stunningly photogenic city. Who else from RFF is going to be there? The opening week begins on July 4th, so I've booked at my usual hotel from Sunday 3rd (to be there from Day 1) to Sunday 10th.

Anyone who doesn't know about the Rencontres and who's not read the reviews of the last 3 years can find them on my site:

2008 http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subsc...es%202008.html

2009 http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subsc...es%202009.html

2010 http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subsc...es%202010.html

Cheers,

R.

Dear Roger,

I'd sure like to go, but: grmpf. Still three weeks away from summer holidays then, so that's a no-go.

Would have liked to meet, maybe some other time...?

Hi,
I live in Arles, so it will be a pleasure to meet some of you… if I'm at home at the start of july.
In fact I can't know now, because I'm musician and I might have to go away for my job.
So the best is to send me private messages few days before.

Just thought I'd bump this. It's less than 4 months away. If I remember I'll bump it in April, May and June as well.

Cheers,

R.

I've just looked at Arles 2010 and want to thank you for posting it. I would love to do the 2012 one-ambitious for me but I'd like to think I can. I went to Arles as a young man but not when the festival was on. Your post has inspired this Aussie.

Wife and me are planning to be in. Looking for a B&B or hotel. Not yet decided where.

"I see that there will be several members of RFF on site, great!"

… and now in French, you should get used :

"Je vois qu'il va y avoir plusieurs membres du RFF sur place, tant mieux!"

Bien sur, mais c'est toujours plus facile parler (en effet, sans grammaire, et sans orthographie) qu'écrire... Aussi les claviers entrangers n'ont toujours suffisament des accents.

Amitiés,

R.

Quick reply as I'm about to go offline: this is excellent to know! I'd love to go, but I'm not sure w/costs, etc. I'm actually on planning a cousin of mine who is in Arles this Spring; I'll probably go there in a couple of weeks. Is there a good place to stay there for pas trop chere?

I went to the 2010 edition and stayed on a campsite. No problems with the site and it was within walking distance of everywhere. And of course, said hallo to Roger and Frances, and several other RFF'rs, and lots of other photographers, organisers etc etc.

Highly recommended for the photography and the informal-yet-effective mini-expos everywhere, plus the informal-and-bizarre ones too, and the very pleasant environment of the town and surroundings.

Hard to say. Contact the Rencontres office (Google the Rencontres 2011) and/or the tourist board. Many people book six months or more in advance, so choice goes down and prices go up quite rapidly from now on. You can normally find somewhere at as little as a week's notice, but at that point you may have to walk 10 minutes or more to the city centre, and you're unlikely to get away with less than 80 euros. There's always a faint chance with the Hotel Voltaire, especially for single rooms with shared bathroom, which are silly-cheap and very acceptable as well as being in central Arles: we always stay at the Voltaire.

Cheers,

R.

Try this one :
http://arlestourisme.com/hebergement.html

They have a list of persons who rent rooms and little appartments in Arles.

I can not make it this year. I have a too busy schedule at work since I am retiring later this year. But next year! Then I am a pensioner!

How do you folks get from Paris to Arles? Train? How far is it by car? Will hotels be packed, or?

Olsen, take the TGV to Avignon then the regular coach to Arles station. The last bit to your hotel etc. is probably easiest by taxi.

Paris to Arles by car : 7 hours

Paris to Arles (direct - 1 or 2 each day): 4 hours

Paris to Arles via Avignon TGV : the most used - 2h40 + 30 min with a "navette" (bus shuttle).
