Interestng. I just received this lens yesterday in trade for some work I did on a Minolta Autocord.
Does this lens go to the Contax in the ad?

Yes, it's a very fine, pre-1941, uncoated Sonnar 50 mm. f:1,5 lens. It surely goes on a 1937-made Contax-II.
To David: thank you for the interesting Contax advertisement!
Best wishes,
E.L.

Thanks everyone.
It's always interesting to see these old adverts, you'd be amazed at some of them. Assuming the dealers know what would sell, a lot of cameras they lusted after in those days have disappeared.
Although the trio that appear in almost every advert were the Leica IIIa (with Summar), the Contax II (with Tessar) and Exakta. Usually there was a forth camera in the advert and they rang the changes between the Rolleiflex, Compas and Robot.
Other that the the magazines are pretty much as they are today. I could answer a lot of forum questions just by reprinting the 30's answers.
Regards, David

Beautiful lens Jack.
I've got a Contax II sitting here, in need of some work. The curtains ribbon had ripped and been jammed into the shutter. I managed to get it reset but still need to replace the ribbons. I think the spring may have been damaged when I received it which led to me putting it aside for a while. A lens like that would motivate me to finish the job or have someone do it. lol

I forgot to mention that the Contax II with f/2 Sonnar was about £53 then and the Leica IIIa with Summar f/2 at £43. As a "yardstick" in the magazine were adverts for 12 day cruises to and from Southampton for £12 visiting Madeira, Casablanc and Lisbon!
