Canon Digital Rebel question

Can someone possibly tell me what system, method or arcane process the Canon Digital Rebel, the original digital Rebel, uses to set up folders on the CF card? I have done nothing to tell it to make new folders, but it does it anyway, and stores photos in them as it wishes.

Not too major a problem, since nothing is lost (and almost nothing is worth saving in the first place,) but I am curious how the camera makes its decisions. And it does make decisions, oh, yess, Preciousss, it does.
