Darkroom / Studio Rental Business

I have been considering starting a darkroom/ studio rental/Photoservices business in my area (southeastern PA). Some initial market testing indicated a fair degree of interest from some of the local camera clubs, but I would welcome any thoughts members of the forum might have. There are potential toxic chemical issues, drainage requirements, waste disposal and other concerns. A buddy in one of the local clubs mentioned all sorts of new FEMA paperwork and visits in the light of 911.

The business would focus on hourly, daily, and weekly rentals for film processing (35mm, medium and large formats), paper processing, and studio rentals. My partner and I are also considering providing vintage camera repair svcs (referral to an established local service) as well as equipment sales (His passion!). I don't think there is much margin in that business considering the demise of many locally owned independent camera shops and the everpresence of Ritzcamera/Wolf Camera/The Camera Shops chains in our area. What are your thoughts?

studio rentals might be easier, less government hassle and more lucrative.
just a guess.

i used a rental darkroom once and it was a nightmare, messy, broken equipment etc.

i think ales today would have to include the internet, likely ebay, even the bigger names in new york were selling older gear on the net.

opinion only as i'm no businessman.

Dear Jeff,

Just a thought: many amateur photographers are pathologically mean. They will spend money on cameras and lenses and NOTHING else -- not even film. Take this into account (as I am sure you have) when it comes to setting up the darkroom side in particular.

Thanks for the input, Joe. I agree with you on the equipment sales end. I had serious questions about the entire concept, until I visited a very successful business similar to my idea with a few extra wrinkles in a nearby state. You are definitely right regarding the equipment. It needs to be top shelf and well maintained. My partner is a lawyer, and is exploring various contractual documents that would support the business. Anyway, I plan on continuing my market research, and am looking to launch first quarter 2006. The last few weeks have focused on site selection. Anyone have any thoughts on that score.
