Optics Theory - This forum is aimed towards the TECHNICAL side of photographic OPTICS THEORY. There will be some overlap by camera/manufacturer, but this forum is for the heavy duty tech discussions. This is NOT the place to discuss a specific lens or lens line, do that in the appropriate forum. This is the forum to discuss optics or lenses in general, to learn about the tech behind the lenses and images. IF you have a question about a specific lens, post it in the forum about that type of camera, NOT HERE.

Leica 35mm Summilux. Add 21mm CV when travelling. That is it.

M6TTL,
One lens: Either 35/2 ASPH or 50/1.5 CV.
Two lenses: Both 35 and 50
Standard setup in Domke F-5XB, 35 or 50 mounted, other in another pocket. In the other pocket, on top of each other, 90/2.8 "fat" and 24/2.8 ASPH. I have a pouch for the 24 & finder, so the two lenses don't bang each other up. I can fit the little Leica SF20 flash on top of the camera in that bag too.

Special occasion: 15/4.5 CV or 135/2.8. I use the 15 quite a bit more than the 135, and I have the CV case for the lens and finder, so I can squeeze it in with the 4-lens kit.

For quite a while I only owned two lenses - Leitz 35 and 50 - for RF and was quite happy with those two FLs. I used a Zeiss 28 a lot on my Contax SLR and after I sold it, I got a 28 Elmarit v2. It was a disappointment and I replaced it with the CV 28/2. I've only had it a few days so it's my lenscap for the foreseeable future. Next on my list is the CV 75/1.8. Since I sold my SLR and DSLR, I need a portrait lens again and what I've seen from it so far looks very nice. I'm also looking to add the CV 12, 15 and 21 at some point but for now, 28/35/50 serves me just fine.

I'm a 50mm kinda guy. I've got a Planar ZM on my Ikon 95% of the time. The other 5% I'm using a Canon 50mm 1.2 for low light, or it's character.

I would like to try a 35mm though.

My RF bag contains a 25/4, 35/2.5 and two 50's; a 50/2 and a 50/3.5 collapsible. The focal lengths are separated by 1.4x, so I either take a single 35 along, or a 25/50 combination. Which 50 I take depends on the light I expect..

One of two configurations goes into my camera bag most of the time, either a
21 + 35 + 90(or 75 but never both)

or

28 + 50 + 90

I try to steer clear of having the next one up, so avoid 35 to 50. The thing is though 90% of the time the lens I start with I keep using all day, I get my eye in and everything in front of me is a 35mm image, or a 21mm image etc. But I know from bitter experience that if I don't carry around another couple of lenses that ellusive image will come along that simply begs for the lens I don't have. So its not a waste of time carrying 'spare' lenses. And the only time I would go out for a day with only one lens on my Leica would be if I had a good P&S camera in my pocket as well. I don't trust the world not to throw up opportunities and surprises!

35mm and 50mm are my prefered focal lengths. I use different lenses for their different characters (mainly Leitz/Leica lenses).
Normal carry around kits are:
- only 35
- only 50
- 35/50
- 21/35/90
- 28/50
Sometimes I carry two M-bodies because I don't like to change lenses very much.

my so called rules

Basic 2 lenses configurations (one on the camera, the other in a pocket) :
- General shooting : 24/2.8 ASPH + 50
- Societal circumstances (when meeting people, parties, country fairs, ...) 35 instead of 24.
- Specific : sport, concert, theatre, street performances and so on, or country/nature : Noctilux + 90.

If seriously involved, I carry a little case and add 90mm.

When shooting for myself I mostly work with the 28/2 and the 50/1.4 ASPH on two bodies. When I'm out on errands or something and not just shooting I most often carry a single body with a 35/1.4 pre-ASPH or the 35/2 Biogon. The 75 does replace the 50 from time to time, depending on where I'm heading.

I've got lenses from 21 through 135 but I rarely carry more than camera and one lens at a time.
Most often, I have my J-8 on the camera and very occasionally I will have another lens in my pocket. That second lens will be different depending on how I feel like varying my framing.
Brands:
CV 21mm (f4)
CV 35mm (f2.5)
Jupiter 50mm (f2)
FED 50 rigid 50mm (f3.5)
Industar 61 LD 50mm (f2.8)
A single (un-coated) element, fixed aperture(f8) approximate 50mm that I made from an I-61 and a lens from Edmund Optical. Haven't used this one nearly enough to decide if it was worth doing or not, so far it seems OK.
Jupiter 9 85mm (f2)
9cm Elmar (f4)
9cm Elmarit (f2.8)
Jupiter 11 135mm (f4.5)

When I do carry two lenses, I tend to carry the 50 and the 21. If I'm using the longer lenses, I mostly don't bring any other lens with me.

I mostly use a 50mm or 35mm as my main lnes, supported by either a 21mm or 25mm lens. The tele is always the last lens for consideration. In my camera bag today, there is a 50mm lens (Opton) supported by a CV 25/4.
