Travelling to Chile - advice on Santiago
I will be travelling to Chile at the end of this month. I expect to spend almost a week or so in and around Santiago.
I am looking for advise regarding stores where one can buy both colour and B&W film (35mm format only): not very picky about the brands, but planning to shoot mostly 100, 400 at best.
I know I will be staying a few blocks away from the Plaza de Armas.
I wonder what's the current situation with film there and what to expect. Should I bring film with me or is it better to get some while in Chile? I would also welcome any tips on local photog stores (esp those selling vintage stuff, for instance) and good labs that can process and develop film. Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance!
Alex

Hi Alex and Elmer,
I am also from Chile, is good know I am the only one here.
There are few places in Santiago to buy film but have enough range of them, I usually buy in JPF (Las condes // metro "El Golf" ) Unfortunately the site is in spanish only, but I guess you can translate with google.

PD. I like the idea of a RFF meet up.

Hi Elmer and s0wk,
Thanks a lot for the swift replies!
@ Elmer: I will get in touch via e-mail as soon as possible.
@ s0wk: Thanks for the tip. Don't worry about Spanish - I was raised as a bilingual child, Spanish being my mom's tongue... Asi que puedo leerlo y hablarlo perfectamente.
I also like the idea of a RFF meet up in Santiago. More on PM.
Cheers,
Alex

Could this thread also become host for some tips on where to visit besides the most popular touristic spots? places, restaurants... I live in Brazil and consider visiting Santiago this year at some point

Hi Marcelo, I better leave that part to our Chilean friends. But I would welcome any nice, inside info on São Paulo. I am planning to visit the town in my next visit to Brazil. Cheers, Alex PD: I was once in São Paulo, but just for two days. Too little time back then...

I'll gather up some good useful tips on where to go, what to see and where to eat and start a thread here on the "Travel" section Will drop you a line when I do so, also if anyone else is interested as well let me know.

I concur with David M, definitely a must see. Valparaiso and Viña de Mar are two locales you do not want to miss! How can I emphasize that?

Valparaiso is a must have, but Santiago also has interesting places to photograph comes to my mind "La vega / patronato", "Historical Santiago", "Persa Bio Bio" but everything depends on you want to see and visit in your travel.
One of the first good pictures of Valparaiso I take.

Thanks in advance, Marcelo. I look forward to hearing from you on nice places in São Paulo. David, Tony and sw0k: thanks for the encouragment! @ David: loved the pictures, especially the third from top - great composition; the sleeveless t-shirt motto, the man's gaze and the seemingly derelict truck contents... Very fine work indeed. @ sw0k: that's a great shot. I love the timeless feeling that oozes out of it. If it werent for the sedan to the left background and the girls' sneakers, it could well have been taken 40 or even 50 years ago and nobody would have noticed the difference. B&W, some grain, the wood (?) lightning or phone post and the old battered Kombi van all help to that very atmosphere.

Oddly enough, I'll be in Santiago Sunday (May 13th) and Monday (May 14th).
Will anyone be around? If I'm by myself, I'll be bringing the 5Dmk2, but if there is any other RFF shooter around, I'll just bring the X100.
