Thanks Helen for all your work. Seems like viii owners are in the minority.
Crisp as the DR but with more contrast of f the bat and modern look. Fantastic.

As my only 50 summicron, I would take the V3:
Much lighter, closer MFD.

I only have the DR Summicron, which Ilike a lot but am surprised that no one has mentioned that this lens is easily excitable by backlight and can flare easily and heavily to the point that it is sometimes to shoot into bright light. Is the 1970 lens also subject to heavy flare?

BTW, I looked at all your shots on flickr and feel that they are a strong argument for the beauty of B&W film.

As I understand it the DR and the Rigid are the same optically, and if so then while it will show some veiling flare in strongly back-lighted situations it isn't that bad, that is if it is clean ... if one has a copy that flares badly I would have it checked and cleaned if need be

I've got it.

The answer to the question is "yes"

Absolutely. The path of rangefinder ownership is arduous and strewn with 50mm lenses.

In seriousness, it's such a shame (for buyers, anyway) that these beautiful older lenses are appreciating so rapidly. When I bought my current DR, which is optically great and a brassing a bit, it cost me about $250, and that was only a couple of years ago. Makes trying a few of these lenses a lot more painful.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either choice, so long as the copy you get has glass that's in good shape.

That can't be right. The answer to The Question is "42"

I'd go for the V3, btw...

V3 is my favourite. I sold my rigids, DR, and tabbed summicron 50s. The only one I have left is the V3. I only shoot BW, albeit digital nowadays.

Thanks for posting this, the more I look at it the more I realise it's a really stunning photograph, with complete, and gentle tone transition. Lovely.

Yeah they're getting very expensive very quickly, I picked up an old 70s summicron for 400$ 2 years ago, now, forget it.
I wasn't too fond of the BW look that lens gave me, but on color, Ektar, I was blown away, absolutely loved it

i think the v3 is among the most under-rated of all Leica glass. It has a genuinely unique fingerprint. That's no knock against the other Summicrons, btw.

Gor for the DR without the goggles and close-focusing capability. It's called the rigid, and it has tab focusing and less weight. Otherwise, the same lens.

The D.R. was still on sale in Germany in late 1969. I would bet that it was around, new, in 1970 as well.
I also owned the Canon 50/1.8. I had it when I was in Germany in 1969. Wonderful lens.
I shot much of my last Kodachrome with the D.R. I very much miss that combination.
Moving right along...I will shoot the last of my APX25 with the D.R.
After the APX25 is gone, I guess I will shoot the last of my Plus-X with the D.R.
I really like my 1961 D.R. Summicron.

Here's a shot that features the close-up mode of the DR. Admittedly i don't use that much, but it is a wonderful feature of the lens:

Cool

I know the OP said B&W.......however, B&W is easy. The D.R. does color very nicely.
Two with Fuji's discontinued ASA 800 NGH II (or NHG II) I can't remember exactly.

And now some B&W.

XP2 Super...

Rigid Cron

My vote is for the DR or a Rigid. Here's a shot from my Rigid Cron, same optics with the DR. On a separate note, my wife also loves it when I use this lens to shoot portraits of her as it gives her the beautiful Leica glow ;-)

Clinical. If you like that sort of thing.

Ever use a Konica Hexar 50/3.5 from the late 40s-early 50s? Totally opposite to the recent Summicrons. That doesn't mean one is better or one is worse. Just diffeerent. In good ways.

I would say it all depends on your taste, I used to have 50/2 Collapsible and Tab Sumicrons but I sold the 50/2 Collapsible (assumed that it has similar contrast as the Rigid and very smooth BOKEH) because I LIKE the high contrast photos from the V4 lens.

Just received my 1957 rigid cron yesterday. Glass in terrific condition, but has a little internal haze with the flashlight, i'll get it cleaned at some point to feed my OCD.

First roll looks just fine. Now I have it, I need to learn to use it. I think my son is thinking the same thing with the tree he captured.
