Frank Jackson on Street Photography I am happy and excited to announce a new RFF forum on Street Photography mentored by Frank Jackson, one of the best producers of analog B/W prints I have ever seen. His shows include the Open Shutter Gallery, Heriard-Cimino Gallery, and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. His images are in the collections of Smithsonian Ogden Museum of Southern Art, California Afro American Museum and Xavier University New Orleans LA. He has worked for or has been featured with Visa Card, Xerox, UCLA, Eric Owen Moss, Architect, Hasselblad Forum (cover),Gordon Parks, Muhammed Ali, Million Man March Wash. DC, Lionel Hampton, jazz legion photographer , 1995-2002, Stevie Wonder, B+W Magazine (British version) twice, Rangefinder Magazine, Dahon Bicycles, Arelli Wheels, Real Product Design, Automobile Club of Southern California. Frank's online images are at fotographz.500px.com and fotographzfrankjackson.tumblr.com . "While on this diverse photographic journey…I have to say during this whole time my love for fine art black and white photography kept growing. I always found time to shoot in different cities and my own personal work…this has sustained me through some very tough times. As of 2012, with the help of a very good friend I maintain a state-of-the-art dream darkroom. The darkroom helps greatly in the on-going practice of understanding “the light”, being able to process film and print drives me to keep my digital photography “organic”. I’m curious visually and shooting what’s, what on the street feeds this curiosity. Everyday I walk out my front door to “see” the world with a digital camera, a film camera, the “cup” and an open mind (mostly).

It's a digital shot. Just took the exposure down a bit, Aperture priority always overexposes on my Nikons, other than that it's SOOC.

OK, I think these are my favorites. I'm kinda surprised at how many are in color.

It seems my previous definition of 'street photography' as 'photography of the street' or perhaps 'photography on the street' was a rather too restrictive...

Making a definition with "not's" is very hard. It will tie you up with knots.

Take mabelsounds nice picture of the Injured Man: taking out the person still would be a portrait of the street.

I have many 'architecture' shots. There the emphasis is on the building, its esthetics, it place in town, and of course there will be some people in it. The emphasis will still be on the (his)story of the building. Even with people after years I found them devoid of sense. I did do a minor in architecture so I looked at the buildings statically, making symmetrical pictures. Now I look at it broader. Rem Koolhaas and many architects see a building as a flux, a flow, as a function, where people not bricks are placed number one. For them a building is part of a street.

Taking the arrow down picture, it is the startling effect of the lady reading the message why the arrow down is not there for her that I like. Imagine the instructions saying 'crawl under the arrow when the elevator opens'. This would be a hilarious film script . . . See what I mean with the constant flux.

Glad you liked the pic Alberti. I just reacted without thinking when I saw the girl there. She balanced the arrow somehow. Your comic script idea sounds fun.

I'm really impressed by this great shot of a beautiful car. The tones, but the reflections we can see on the car, wow ...troppo bello!

An Dong market it is, Peter you know your Saigon
I just checked and only have these three, the two above and the following, and none of the market building itself. Around Binh Tai market, your pics, it may even be more picturesque and lively but An Dong certainly has it's own charms, I am curious to see yours
btw. these three had been taken with Ricoh GXR M and Heliar 4/5/15

great blog, thank you!
has the 'black friday' maze caught on in other European countries too? I don't even know. ( later edit: oh, I just looked at Austrian online news, and there it was, a big ad of a sports equipment seller of a 'Black Friday Sale', yes, it says so in English, and it adds 'jetzt shoppen', 'jetzt' in German, the native tongue for 'now', and 'shoppen' a 'germanised' version of shopping)
Commercialized American style Halloween unfortunately has been overshadowing own, local traditions.
