Cameras in the Movies / TV / Media If you are a photographer, it's difficult not to appreciate movies too. In this forum you can discuss movies, as well as the cameras used in them. What camera used in what film / TV show etc has long been a topic of discussion at RFF. Whether the Exakta and 400mm Kilfitt lens in Hitchcock's Rear Window or the Nikons in Eastwood's Bridges of Madison County, cameras are tools which reflect the time and technology of the film.

Cameras in movies...

Just two movies I've seen last night:

Guilty by suspiction - Robert De Niro gives a Leica (?) to his son, but I can't tell what is it,

Twister - Nikon (F3?) on front dashboard in a few shots during movie.

Hope to get more entries from you guys.

Merry Christmas!

I watched Le Mans last night. Clearly a Leica used to photograph Steve McQueen between the paddock and his trailer. cThe movie was made in 1971. So, the camera was one of the following: M2, M3 or M4. I doubt that the M5 had hit the streets by then.

In the movie "Blood Diamond", the photojournalist uses a leica. Not sure if its an M7 or M6.

Spygame. Brad Pitt's character impersonating a Leica toting PJ.

I think it's called Spygame... Has Robert Redford, as well.

In the intro to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Will Smith hangs out of the cab window with a old style viewfinder camera. I think it's one of the older kodak models. Does anyone know what it is? It's always bugged me.

There's a slew of motorized Nikon F2s (a few of them armed with Honeywell Strobonars) in Frost/Nixon (great movie, BTW). In fact, the attention to detail overall is pretty much spot-on. (Boy, those VHS cassettes are looking more anachronistic all the time...).

Even though I haven't seen it yet, cameras seem to figure largely in Milk as well (among other things, Harvey Milk ran a camera shop).

In "Vanishing Point" there's a lady with an Argus C-3 in the crowd shooting the wreck.

- "Days of glory" ("Indigenes" in French) a movie about Arabians serving in the French army at Monte Cassino a Zorki C posing as a Leica
- "HollywoodLand"" with Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck. Brody as a private eye uses an Argus with a tele lens for his job.
- Five graves to Cairo. Erich von Stroheim as Rommel of course used a Leica just as Rommel did and he insited that a film was in it.

In the Peter Weir film The Year of Living Dangerously, photojournalist Billy Kwan
(played by Linda Hunt, who won an Academy Award for the role) uses a Nikon F.

BTW I recommend this film!

Leica M4 in "The Midnight Meat Train"

A lot of scenes with M4-P
I see this guy has both eyes opened. Is M4-P viewfinder magnification close to 1.00? If not, it's just acting in the movie, I guess.

BTW, It's a good movie.

I saw a really cheesy film (didn't catch the title) about 2 medieval chaps turned into frogs only to become human again in modern day New York

There was a woman in the film (as the love interest) who often had a Leica M6 (?) over her shoulder.

Clint Eastwood also schlepps a black Nikon SP with an S36 drive and Jacobson Powercon battery pack in "the Bridges of Madison County".
Nick Nolte (playing fictional Photojournalist Russel Price ) in "Under Fire" uses Nikon F's and a motorized F2, (as well as schelpping a Leica M something or other around his neck).
Mathew Modine and the actor portraying "combat correspondant" "Rafterman" use Nikon Fs in "Full Metal Jacket".
Dennis Hopper as the photojournalist in "Apocalypse Now" schleps about three or four Nikon Fs.

Hi, I spotted a Stereo lensed Konica Hexar AF on Battlestar Galactica, season four, episode 3, 'The Ties that Bind".

Screen shots are here:

Funny thing is, it's not a simple prop. I saw one for sale on eBay about a year ago, it was professionally converted and fully functional.

In 'Two Lovers', Joaquin Phoenix shoots with a Nikon F with the huge metered prism, and a 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor-S if I remember correctly. Good movie.

And in one main scene they flop the image and Sir Peter is tripping the shutter button that's located on the wrong side on the camera...
I announce my displeasure to the room every time I see that...
