Ok, so instead of just clicking the 'like' button I'm gonna attempt some constructive criticism. It is the critique forum afterall
I think it takes too many clicks to get to the large pictures. First I click on 'photographs', then I see small project thumbnails and then when I click on them I see small image thumbnails. Personally I would lose the Weston quote on page one of 'photographs' and instead make the project thumbnails much bigger. Then when clicking on the projects I would like to be taken right to the first picture of the series instead of seeing another row of thumbnails.
Just my opinion of course. |

Just read about Oerlemans this morning. Indeed, you just don't know who your friends are, both sides could turn either way.
Tremendous work! I will be revisiting the site. Just one comment (with excuse about the technicality rather than contents): all photos seem to be sized according to width, which makes vertical, portrait oriented photos almost twice as big.
Edit: interesting, the way Dutch media reported the same news this morning it seemed the jihadists were "opposition mercenaries" while their rescuers were government fighters.............. that article has been changed and extended now.

Great work John, keep'em coming! In many respects I think this is your best work thus far. You may have some stronger individual shots in other projects, but there is a homogeneity and consistent feel to these images which is IMHO much stronger. Your colour treatment and consistency is noticeably different and I wonder if this is something you have worked on? I am going to confidently predict even better work from your next stint, now that you seem to be in a groove. No pressure

Wow. Some pretty powerful images. Just looked through the "Ritalin Kids" set and was really hit hard. That's great work.

yes, the sizing bit will have to be addressed. been 'remote' for most of the past 5 months and updating site wasn't in my plans. forgot the name i was using came up for renewal right as i was dodging helicopters and rockets. DOH as Homer says. my ability to keep up to, or on top of the influx of jobs, media, inquiries and workload i get daily is showing its cracks.
as per the story mentioned, i know it very well if anyone wants clarification. i know the folks who were orchestrating the 'rescue' as well. there was a media blackout as it unfolded and folks did a bang up job of keeping their mouths shut. bravo! |

well, i have been an adamant B+W guy for ever but this time around i wanted to take the people outside the regular fighting coverage we all see. more of an 'old scans from a trip in the 80's' feel was the goal. truthfully, as i am sure you know, prolonged combat can be very draining. it was a mental health choice to try and look outside that. again, i am sure you know exactly what i speak of.
it does seem i have entered into to some sort of 'groove' with the big publications these days. nerve wracking and exhilarating. more pressure than i have ever experienced. |
