Tom Abrahamsson of RapidWinder.com It is almost never that an inventor improves on a Leica product so that it is better than the original Leica product. Tom holds that distinction with his RapidWinder for Leica M rangefinders -- a bottom mounting baseplate trigger advance. In addition Tom manufacturers other Leica accessories such as his very popular Soft Release and MiniSoftRelease shutter releases. Tom is well known as one of the true Leica rangefinder experts, even by Leica. IMPORTANT READ THIS: CWE Forum hosts have moderation powers within their forum. The online rangefinder community won't be the same without him. His legacy will live on in every soft release or rapidwinder made, every Leica M2 purchased, and every cat named Mr. Barnack.

I meet Tom once at a camera swap in Vancover. So sad to hear he passed. My thoughts and prayers are with Tom and all his family. He told me what good is your camera if you have to take it out of the bag first. I also owned one of his winders.

my heart sank when i read the title of this post...tom was a kind and generous guy...last time i was in vancouver, he invited me to join the friday morning b'fast group that he regularly attended...great bunch of very friendly guys...eating, drinking coffee and passing around gear for us all to check out...it was a warm and friendly morning and one that i was hoping to someday repeat. tom drove me back to my hotel, telling me about the old mercedes we were driving in. he was pleased with it's initial price and loved driving it. i was surprised at some of the things he shared with me...almost a stranger but i think that was just his way...i am saddened to think that his friends and family will no longer have him in their day to day lives...and i will miss him.

It is no exaggeration that the RFF has lost part of its soul -- so soon after Peter too much to accept.

i have to say that i really enjoyed tom's nikon month pics and stories...i think nikon made the handsomest cameras and tom seemed to love them as he loved his leicas...i think i'll start to look for an old nikon kit to use occasionally to help keep tom in mind.

Sad to hear the news. My condolences to his family. Tom was a gentleman and his love for tinkering with cameras, has helped many over the years. I bought two of his Leica M grips and several soft touch. He will be missed by many.

Very sad news, my thoughts are with Tuulikki. I first met T & T ca. 1999 or so in Paris, where my son and I helped celebrate Tuulikki's birthday over dinner in the Marais. Since then we've shared good times in Kits Beach and at mon chez moi, and met at various LHSA meetings across the U.S. A dedicated photographer, tinkerer and flaneur, and a generous spirit. Tom will be greatly missed.

When I saw the thread title I avoided it for 3 hours....
just didn't want it to be true.

I always like to read what Tom writes.
For me Tom has a way to always sound interesting and fresh & full of goodness and wisdom too. Remarkable man and will be much missed.

Sad to see 2017 continues on from 2016 - in losing so many great people.

This is one of the beautiful things RFF does -- I would never have known about Tom's death otherwise and, while it is very sad news, I would rather know then not.

I did have the pleasure of meeting and knowing him. I feel like were friends albeit distant ones.

My heart goes out to Tuulikki and to everyone who knew and loved Tom.

I only have chat with him through email before. The only thing I knew from him is that he was a very nice gentleman and a very famous member in photography. I feel so sad that I could not have a chance to meet him before. We lost so many lovely people in the past 2016, and now we lost one more... Just so sad...

R.I.P. Tom.

My condolences to his family and loved ones.

I came here directly from seeing a photo posted by Helen Hill. I wasn’t sure I was reading her comments correctly and thought I’d stick my nose in a door I haven’t entered for a very long time.

Tom was a regular here at RFF and a modern day legend in photography. He was also a supporter of a couple of pools that I admin over at Flickr both are film based pools. He would often figuratively stop by, look and comment on some of the shots I had in my stream.

He was as everyone has described. A model of knowledge, affability and warmth. Tom seems to have had that magic of being able to ‘touch everyone’ in some manner. For that I think we are all better in this curious community cemented together by cameras.

Tom ‘bon voyage’ we will miss you. Tuulikki my deepest condolences I know my words are inadequate but believe me and everyone here when we each say we wish you support at this time.

Jan

Such terrible news - I'm in shock!

Tom will be sorely missed. I always enjoyed reading his posts and see his latest Flickr feed.

We have sadly lost one on the 'greats' of the RF community.

RIP Tom

As you may know, besides being a contributor to the RFForum, Tom is also a frequent contributor to the LUG (Leica Users Group), and it's just so happen that I am the editor of the LUG year book 2015 and I am in the process of working on the book for 2016.

I would like to include photos and tribute to Tom. I have gotten a good number of photos already. but if you have any treasured photos or memories of Tom, please send them to me richard@richardmanphoto.com for inclusion.

Very sad indeed
My early forays into film rangefinder photography and film developing involved reading countless of advice from Tom A. Sent him a few emails throughout the years, each was replied with graciously with invaluable advices.

What a legend and a huge loss for the the photographic community worldwide.
