Tom Abrahamsson of RapidWinder.com It is almost never that an inventor improves on a Leica product so that it is better than the original Leica product. Tom holds that distinction with his RapidWinder for Leica M rangefinders -- a bottom mounting baseplate trigger advance. In addition Tom manufacturers other Leica accessories such as his very popular Soft Release and MiniSoftRelease shutter releases. Tom is well known as one of the true Leica rangefinder experts, even by Leica. IMPORTANT READ THIS: CWE Forum hosts have moderation powers within their forum. Bon Voyage Tom; you were the sort of person that makes RFF a great place to hang out. I'll miss your posts.

My condolences to Tuulikki and all family and friends. Although I didn't have the pleasure of personally meeting Tom, my interactions with him on the forum showed that he was truly a gentleman of the finest class. The world is a slightly less wonderful less place for his passing.

Rest in peace Tom.

What sad news. RIP Tom

I had hoped to visit Vancouver this Spring and finally meet Tom face to face, sadly too late. I'm same age and have my own health problems so this comes as a wake up call to make the most of remaining time.

Oh no, that's terrible news! I didn't know Tom personally, but seeing this post gave me a real pang of loss and sadness. I guess he meant more to the RFF and photography community at large than meets the eye....

Rest in Peace, Tom. So much of what I learned about rangefinders and film cameras came from him. Condolences to his family.

I am so sad to see such a wonderful member of the community passing. It's very sad, and I hope the best for his family during this time.

Rapidwinder is going to continue, it seems, so if you want to help support the family at this time, while getting yourself something nice, go buy yourself a couple softies!

This was shortly before he field stripped my rapid winder to make sure it was still in good working order.

Here's a box of Tri-X he jokingly autographed for me. TX Forever indeed!
That looks like Lexington?

Thanks for adding those links, Stephen. Reading them gives us 'noobies' a better idea of who he was and how he lived his life.
While I didn't know him, I felt a certain kinship being an ex-machinist myself. I really admired that he had the discipline to make the products he did.
I hope his wife can take some comfort in these heartfelt messages as it is quite evident that Tom touched a lot of people in a very positive way.
RIP Tom.

I am generally just a browser on this site, but I have long understood that Mr. Abrahamsson was an icon of the community. When I search the RFF archives for opinions or information, it has always been a treat to uncover a relevant post from him, with that mix of wit, wisdom, and enthusiasm, delivered in a generous spirit. My condolences to those close to him.

I just saw the news and really shocked. The previous latest new I read months ago was his reply in some thread that he was recovering from a back injury.

It's a really sad news. Tom has replied my questions in this forum with very detailed and helpful information.

I loved the guy. He took the time to reply to questions and he was always a true gentleman.
We could all learn something from his example.

I'll think of him every time I use my Rapidwinder.

RIP Mr Tom.

Damn, this is devastating news. I never met Tom in person but I was connected to him via Flickr and other social media platforms. Every time I posted something on Flickr he would like it. It's a big regret not meeting the man in person. My condolences to his family and friends.

Just saw this. Condolences to Tuulikki. And to Tom's many friends, acquaintances, admirers, acolytes, converts and others. What a great contribution he made to this site, and all the many other realms, photographic and otherwise, that he touched. A life well lived and a spirit that will be missed. More than once, even though I never met him personally, he offered help (and encouragement. Truly a sweet, sweet soul.

Tom Abrahamsson was a dear friend. He was a brilliant designer and a kind and generous soul. Though he is gone all too soon his presence in the Leica and Nikon RF worlds will be forever felt.

My deepest condolences to Tuulikki Abrahamsson, whose own genius added Tom's work.

I followed Tom's daily walks through Vancouver through his daily photos on Flickr. I always thought of him as someone I would really like to meet one day, maybe on a trip out west. I'm sorry I'll never get the chance. My deepest condolences to Tuulikki and all Tom's friends and family.
