| Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history! |

i see (elsewhere) an ad for a used m8 priced at $1600 cdn. and think to myself...too much money for an m8 (tho a good price) and yet i am prepared to pay 3000k cdn for an rx1...
time to rethink my (camera) value system?

is the 5d Mark 1 a better camera body than the m8 yes? Nice sensor , better iso performance...
you can get one used for 500 , well I found for that price anyway , and use a manual focusing compact prime Zeiss lens on it.
I think that would still be cheaper and have nice bokeh on your images.

Well the M8 is not full frame, but yes there does seem to be a disparity.

the style...i shoot a limited topic most of the time...i prefer rangefinders but am becoming very fond of the rx100/rx1 kind of camera as well.
i have no need for long lenses...they feel like cheating to me...

Hey back alley why are you planning on keeping the rx100 and the rx1 at the same time?
Isn't the rx1 just a better camera overall?

you could always think about having a xpro1 used and get a leica adapter on it.. From my understanding around the same style as a digilux 1 , better iso performance than the m8 , same sensor , and can use leica glass..
Pretty sure you can find used xpro1s cheap now days

Well M8 prices are dropping. A some price point no one could resist. For $500 each you could have three and just pitch them as they fail.

Both probably and somewhere with shorter, warmer winters so you can spend more time shooting with your R-D1s

back alley,
look for a used M9 (around 5k US, BCC Westwood, NJ), at some point of time the urge for a full frame RF will get to you. So you can save some money in buying the right thing in the first place . I think Roger also started a thread with a similar topic.

silly to think about a digital m when i have 2 rd1s...
i need to sell one rd1 and put that towards an rx1...then my kit will be complete and well rounded...drf with lenses...m4-p for film and rx1 for 90% of my shooting...rx100?

That depends if shopping is what you like. If at some point of time you realize that you have some gear that you really love to use and basically forget about it because it doesn't get in the way of your shooting then you might say "I'm done". For me the M9 is well good enough... but I made the transition from film M's directly and never wasted any money on non-FF size sensor cameras (incl. M8).
