Philosophy of Photography Taking pics is one thing, but understanding why we take them, what they mean, what they are best used for, how they effect our reality -- all of these and more are important issues of the Philosophy of Photography. One of the best authors on the subject is Susan Sontag in her book "On Photography."

Do you have stuff that you own but haven't used?

Do you have stuff that you own buy haven't used?

e.g. the collector GAS affliction - buy, shelve, sometimes even forget about

I think I'm reaching a point where I am more wanting to liquidate my un-used stuff.

Not sure what's driving it, maybe an unconscious drive to fund a Leica Milestone.

Maybe fear of further devaluation of unused film stuff.

Maybe the appeal of "having" is waning.

Maybe I'd just rather have more film and fewer cameras and lenses and accessories.

You?

Yes. Got some exotic gears that I don't use often (at all). Thinking if I should get rid of them...

Yes. It's starting to bother me. I do need to start unloading, but which? (Thus inertia sets in.)

I do have some... issues... yes. These were collected since january this year:

(Plus a few more not shown.)

I usually carry at least two of these, but even then... some see little use. I've only shot one roll on the Holga, maybe about 10 or so on the Bronica... some haven't seen any film such as the EOS 1000FN bottom right. I love to own them just the same. It's just fun to know that you have a particular model, lens type or feature set if you might need it.

It does allow me to be very flexible in terms of film use.

I seem to have half a dozen Weston meters, some might still be near enough accurate. My original EOS620 became unreliable after a wet weekend in Wales ten years ago. I bought an EOS600 on ebay to replace it, but never used it as I realised an EOS1 could be had really cheap now everyone was going digital. I went digital 2 years ago, I still have the three EOSs sitting in a box waiting to go to a good home. (together with two data backs and a remote, never used.) I havn't used the XA2 for ten years, is it worth the cost of a service? Am I ever likely to use it?
The FED3 I keep for sentimental reasons. But the 45 year old Patterson tank and the two measuring cylinders? The 1950s model I inherited from my father may have gone in the last Great Decluttering, I think. I also have a Patterson NPL certified mecury thermometer, I shall keep that just to show what I think of the saftey elves.

There are some stuff that is used less than others - shelf queens are few and usually are cameras that have issues of some kind.

Yes. Mostly 'irresistible bargains' = 'waste of money' such as a 300/4 East German lens.

Like others, I ought really to thin out some of this junk.

Cheers,

R.

Yes - too much, taking up too much room.
But I've learnt a lot through having what I have.
And now not sure what to do with it all.
Do I bother to get my much loved Leica 1c repaired now that the shutter seems to have lost its tapes or something? Or do I use it as a paper weight?
At some stage I'll get round to thinking about the possibilities.
Today I'll leave that until tomorrow.
Who said 'tomorrow never comes'?

Do I have stuff that I haven't used...sure...I have a Weston Ranger that needs a tune-up and will be a back up to another one I have or I'll just have it in another bag of gear...
The reason I bought it was I paid $1 plus shipping for it and the case was just about perfect...the meter is cosmetically in great condition but it needs a tune up and a battery upgrade...I mainly bought it for the leather case...
I have two Nikon FE's and FM's that now do not get a lot of use...at the time I bought them they did...
The one that hurts the most is my 4x5 gear...I love it, love using it but it still doesn't get out as much as it should...it is a lot of work to use it but so worth it...
I had a camera that was given to me and I really never used it so I gave it away to a friend...haven't missed it one bit...

I have a leica M2 that I bought because I wanted the lens attached to it, an LTM Nikkor 3.5cm/1.8. Never used the body, and probably never will. I oughta sell it.

I have a bunch of stuff I've used once or twice but decided wasn't for me. And one or two cameras I purchased and immediately realized that the ergonomics disagreed with me so strong that I wouldn't use it. I've just been really slow about getting stuff up for sale recently.

I also have more than a reasonable number of project cameras. I'll probably get back to dealing with more repair over winter.

I have sold a lot of the things I have not used.
But still I can see some items which I also should get rid of.

I do have cameras I never use, but those are all 1-5€ flea market things. Aso I don't see the problem - just think about all the other (not camera related) stuff you own but never use. And it's probably better anyway to stick to 1-3 cameras for actually taking photos instead of feeling the urge to use a different one each day, forgetting which film they are loaded with, getting used to the operation over and over again etc. With lenses and accessoires it's the same - I haven't used a tripod or a telephoto lens in years but that doesn't mean I have to feel guilty for owning them and I never look at my 'Autoknips' thinking 'It's about time for a self portrait because that thing must feel really useless.'

I have more gear than I need. Over the past year and some, I bought quite a bit as my photographic pursuits have been changing quite a lot. I used all of it a little bit, at least.

Now that I've figured out what I am going to work with, I'll be selling a good bit of it.
