Thanks, Ron. That's very kind.
What I'm finding is that the MM is able to capture a very wide gamut of scenes - everything from gentle, subtle tonal transitions to harsh, contrasty, in-your-face images.
Here's one that breaks all the rules. I've shot this scene before in color and in that genre the distinctive orange of the flame provides enough separation to hold its place in the image. In black and white, the transparent flame nearly disappears. To address that I deliberately blew out the highlights and added contrast.

The man on bench is brilliant!
How do you like shooting in extreme contrasts, compared to the M9 sensor (bright, blowing sky + deep shadow detail)?
Is it a big step up or similar behaving, as the M9?

Thanks. Compared to the M9 the Monochrom is much smoother in it's tonal range that I need to add contrast. In this shot I put it through a Silver Efex Pro 2 filter to match how I like my black and white.

Thanks for sharing your insights. Very helpful in my waiting for my delivery. I wonder since I'm an old school analog film guy if my use of 2x yellow and 3x orange filters will carry over. I always liked my contrast on my negatives instead of pumping it up in the darkroom.
Also know that I'm a lazy slacker and wish to do the minimal in post processing as possible.
Anyways the look the Monochrome produces with your post processing is kinda what I do in medium format film. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Well, here is a tip:
In b&w if the foreground objects are not 'separated' from background objects the image has no depth and sense of space.
Since a photo is 2D the only way to create this separation is by gradual transition of tones, so if the scene is not high contrast and you "make it" high contrast that separation is lost, for example in the shot above there is no separation between the buildings and the sky.
Now, look again. |
